vPar and Ignite

vPar and Ignite

I have an rp8400 system, using all four cell boards. On the fourth cell board, it contains two PA8700+ CPUs. I would like to use vPar to split the two CPUs into separate system. The first vPar, vPar1, can take advantage of the internal slots for disk, DVD and tape. The second vPar, vPar2, will only have external disk for boot along with a HBA and lan card.

The question is; can vPar2 take advantage of the DVD and tape drive in vPar1 for Ignite reload? Can vPar2 boot its Ignite media from either the DVD or tape drive in vPar1 while vPar1 is being use? I am trying to not to buy another DVD and tape unit dur to cost and space. I just need to use the tape and DVD during vPar2 failure for rebuilt.

Thx in advance

NO, but you can make vPar1 an ignite server or use any other ignite server you have.

NO

Re: vPar and Ignite

Harry, how about if both of the vPar's were rebooted. Can vPar2 access the DVD and tape while vPar1 is down? thanks

Re: vPar and Ignite

If you don't have an Ignite server, install one. Then use vparboot from vPar1 to boot vPar2 two from the Ignite server, vparboot -p vPar2 -I,WINSTALL. Using this method you will never need more than one dvd per nPar (hard partition) and thats when installing the very first vPar.

Re: vPar and Ignite

Hi,

since a while (and the latest versions) Ignite is supported on vPar.

But for disaster recovery the whole system (all vPars) needs to go down, and restarted to boot from the Ignite tape (vpmon does not support booting from tape, only from internal disk or from an Ignite sever).
As vpmon is then bypassed the second vpar will see all hardware, including the tape drive, and the Ignite backup can be restored. Just be extremely carefull not to touch any disk of another vPar (this is where good documentation prooves its value).

BUT ... how are you going to create Ignite backup tapes without a tape drive? ;-)

You could use the primary vPar as an Ignite server and put your Ignite backups on that server. In this way the primary vPar does not have to go down when recovering the second vPar.

Thierry.
