vPar on L-class

Hi
I'm planning a upgrade to 11i on a L2000 in order to create 2 virtual partitions.

Do you have a checklist or some tips of this process, using Partition Manager?

Is it necessary with additional hw (interface / disks) in order to get this running?

Re: vPar on L-class

HP plans to release VirtualPartitions (VPars) later this year - it is not available yet.

Virtual Partitions enables you to partition one HP 9000 server into multiple virtual machines. You can run multiple instances of HP-UX (11i or later) simultaneously(!) on a single HP 9000 server (L3000 and N-Class servers are planned to be supported in the initial release). Additional hardware is planned to be supported soon, including Superdome. A virtual partition runs an "instance" of HP-UX 11i, which hosts its own applications, and is assigned its own subset of CPUs, memory, and I/O. Each virtual partition can be a different version of HP-UX 11i and have different patches.

Once available you will be able to download it on http://www.software.hp.com.

Re: vPar on L-class

Hi Carsten
As far as I can see so is Partition Manager available from the software depot now!

The question then is; do I need separate root disks and interface cards?

Re: vPar on L-class

Partition Manager (parmgr) is something different and has nothing to do with vPars. Unfortunately this sounds very similar and it confused me, too.

Parmgr is used to divide a Superdome system only into several subpartitions (multiple computers in one box), whereas vPars is used to put multiple OS's on one system.

More details on parmgr can be found on docs.hp.com, e.g. http://www.docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/fsearch/framedisplay?top=/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90702/B2355-90702_top.html&con=/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90702/00/00/37-con.html&toc=/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90702/00/00/37-toc.html&searchterms=parmgr&queryid=20010618-015300

I cannot answer your vPars question, since vPars is not released yet and documentation (once available) can still change. Sorry..

Re: vPar on L-class

Parmgr and ls /usr/sbin/par* commands on 11i are not for software/virtual partitioning systems.

The commands are there for the Superdome, Hard Partition configuration. They are useless on your N L V as they are.

HP will introduce vPartitions on the ia64 releases of the future.
I heard end 2002.

If you want a partitioning system now the only solution is a superdome. It can be bought in a competively priced, upgradeable, minimum config 2 partition 8way (16cpu configuration)

Re: vPar on L-class

Ahaaa!

That cleared things up a bit.

Would'nt mind a Superdome system at my site but I guess that for my test and development systems that's not likely to happen.

VPar release late 2002,... sic, just have to find my stack of cards and play a little Solitare while I wait...

Thanks guys!

Re: vPar on L-class

Andreas, Bill mentioned 2002 for vPar release on ia64, not PA-RISC. The last I heard from HP was around September 2001 for vPar on N and L class, but of course that is subject to change. If I have to wait until 2002 for vPar on my new N4000, I'll have to start shopping for another job. It's a long story.

Check out the following URL:

http://escatc.cup.hp.com

VPars should be available for General Release
in the September 2001 timeframe for L/N-Class
servers with SuperDome following in late-Dec
or early-Jan 2002. Keystone (new 16-way box)
should get vPars sometime thereafter.

At this web-site, look for Virtual Partitions
under Focus Technologies. Lots of goodies:
White Papers, Presentations, Demos, and a
SysAdmin Addendum Guide.

Contact Laurie Robell, Program Manager, about
the Early Access Program for customers who are
interested in evaluating pre-release software.

I have it up and running at the FedEx World
Technology Center on L/N-Class systems and it
is getting rave reviews.
