VPARS on rp8420 server running 11i v2

Hi All,

We are planning to setup 4 virtual server on 2 core rp8420. Can someone clarify the following questions?

1. What resources are shared in VPAR setting?
2. If the VPAR functionality is not a part of the O.S, how much overhead is typically used by this software?

3. Would the hardware resources are dynamically allocated or dio we set the hard limits on it?

I appreciate if you can direct me to a good documentation on this subject.

Thanks.

Hope this helps;

What resources are shared in VPAR setting?

All hardware is shared, but you may specifically allocate CPU, memory and I/O.

If the VPAR functionality is not a part of the O.S, how much overhead is typically?

Think of it as running whole separate O.S. If your server is running at 50% with one O.S. then at two is would be running at 100%. This is generally speaking.

Would the hardware resources are dynamically allocated or dio we set the hard limits on it?

You allocate what CPU you want the VPAR to use how much memory and so on...

Here are some basic requirements of VPARS

1. Minimum of one CPU

2. Enough memory to run HP-UX

3. A boot disk. (it is not possible to share bus adapters between Vpars)

Do you mean what does one Vpar share with another? If so, nothing from an OS perspective ther than the uderlying vparmonitor.
From a hardware perspective, the Vpars reside on the "shared " chassis/environment framework, and can "share" I/O cages, Cel boards, but each Vpar gets allocated it's own CPU's, Memory and I/O cards which are NOT shared between Vpars

>2. If the VPAR functionality is not a part of the O.S, how much overhead is typically used by this software?
Vpars is a purchaseable add on piece of software, and it's overhead is minimal.

>3. Would the hardware resources are dynamically allocated or dio we set the hard limits on it?
Resources currently are generally allocated statically, except for CPU's.
