VxFS Limitations

****Sorry, the first post sent without question.

I have run:
fstyp -v /dev/vg00/lvol4

and got vxfs version 4 as a response.

From what I have read that means that I have JFS 3.3 or greater. Correct?

Still, however, I cannot create a file system greater than 1TB either through commandline or sam.

any suggestions?

Re: VxFS Limitations

Hi,
This is for your information.

JFS (VxFS) Supported Sizes
The following table lists the maximum file and file system sizes that the Journaled File System (JFS)
supports. JFS is also known as the VERITAS File System (VxFS).
Note: Although it may be possible to create files or file systems larger than these documented limits,
HP does not support such files and file systems, and the results of using them may be unpredictable.
HP-UX Release JFS Version Disk Layout Version Maximum Supported File Size Maximum Supported File System Size
10.01 JFS 2.0 Version 21 2 GB 4 GB
10.10 JFS 2.0 Version 21 2 GB 128 GB
10.20 JFS 3.0 Version 2 2 GB 128 GB
10.20 JFS 3.0 Version 31 128 GB 128 GB
11.00 JFS 3.1 Version 2 2 GB 128 GB
11.002 JFS 3.1 Version 31 1 TB 1TB
11.00 JFS 3.3 Version 2 2 GB 128 GB
11.00 JFS 3.3 Version 31 1 TB 1 TB
11.00 JFS 3.3 Version 4 1 TB 1 TB
11i V1 JFS 3.3 Version 2 2 GB 128 GB
11i V1 JFS 3.3 Version 3 2 TB 2 TB
11i V1 JFS 3.3 Version 41 2 TB 2 TB
11i V1.5 JFS 3.3 Version 41 2 TB 2 TB
11i V1 JFS 3.5 Version 4 2 TB 2 TB
11i V1.6 JFS 3.5 Version 4 2 TB 2 TB
11i V23 JFS 3.5 Version 5 2 TB 12 TB
Table 2: JFS (VxFS) Supported File and File System Sizes

So i doubt you could be having "11.00 JFS 3.3 Version 2" so max file size is 2GB and Filesystem Size is 128 GB.

Hope that helps.

Re: VxFS Limitations

I am running HPUX 11i on a superdome. How can I tell which version of 11i I am running.

Regardless, 11i should be able to do 2TB file systems as shown on your list. I most definitely cannot create a file system greater than 1TB.

Re: VxFS Limitations

Not too sure for version - but try:

swlist -v HPUXBase64|more

As far as creating filesystem - how are you creating? Do you have a vg with more the a TB in it? How big are the LUN's?

Re: VxFS Limitations

No LUNs, just 13 disk an array. The VG has > 1.75TB. I have tried creating the file system through sam and by command line. No matter what options I give newfs it will not allow me to create a file system bigger than 1TB.

Re: VxFS Limitations

Unless you have an Integrity Superdome with Itanium processors, you are running 11.11 or 11i version 1. Try doing a swlist to see what version of JFS is installed.

Re: VxFS Limitations

What is the correct command syntax to get the JFS version from swlist?

Re: VxFS Limitations

Hi.
swlist -l fileset|grep JFS

Re: VxFS Limitations

That command reports a bunch of stuff that doesn't look very useful. Mostly version are B.11.11. Is that what you are looking for?

Re: VxFS Limitations

Okay - so you lvcreated a lvol > then 1TB - right?

Instead of newfs, try mkfs

mkfs -F vxfs -o largefiles /dev/vgXX/lvolXX
