vxvm:vxconfigd: ERROR: Cannot reset VxVM kernel: A virtual disk device is open
I am not able to start vxconfigd deamon and also because of that i am not able to populate disks under vxvm through vxinstall.
# vxinstall
.......
........
Populating VxVM DMP device directories ....
vxvm:vxconfigd: ERROR: Cannot reset VxVM kernel: A virtual disk device is open
Tried the command :
bash-2.02# vxconfigd -k -r reset -d
vxvm:vxconfigd: ERROR: Cannot reset VxVM kernel: A virtual disk device is open
I was facing the same issue in another node but the issue resolved after issuing the above command successfully.
I have checked the troubleshooting guide and the error resolution is given as under.
vxvm:vxconfigd: ERROR: Cannot reset VxVM kernel:reasonDescription: The-r resetoption was specified to vxconfigd, but the VxVM kerneldrivers could not be reset. The most common reason is "A virtual disk device is open." This implies that a VxVM tracing or volume device is open.
Action:
If you want to reset the kernel devices, track down and kill all processes that have a volume or VERITAS Volume Manager tracing device open. Also, if any volumes are mounted as file systems, unmount those file systems.Any reason other than "A virtual disk device is open" does not normally occur unless there is a bug in the operating system or in VxVM.
I rebooted the system thrice but still the same issue persists.
If anybody have any solution to the above issue please let me know.

Re: vxvm:vxconfigd: ERROR: Cannot reset VxVM kernel: A virtual disk device is open
vxdisk -o alldgs list
vxprint
If you seek to break everything down and start over, maybe stopping volumes and deporting volumes will get you where you want to go.
vxvol -g MYDG stopall
vxdg deport MYDG

Re: vxvm:vxconfigd: ERROR: Cannot reset VxVM kernel: A virtual disk device is open
Infact how can you deport the dgs when the vxconfigd is not getting enable. Infact an alternative solution was successfull at times, i.e if you remove the file /etc/vx/reconfig.d/state.d/install-db ( if atall it is created ) and then reboot the system the command # vxconfigd -k -r reset -d works. and u can go ahead with the # vxinstall command.

...
Any reason other than "A virtual disk device is open" does not normally occur unless there is a bug in the operating system or in VxVM.
So you have to make sure you have the newest patch on the system. I would open a case on this at HP.

Re: vxvm:vxconfigd: ERROR: Cannot reset VxVM kernel: A virtual disk device is open
A few questions:
1) Is the above true? an EVA is involved?
2) Are you using AutoPath or SecurePath?
3) Is your environment fully supported by VxVM?
4. Are you licensed fully in VxVM (i.e. DMP is active?)
5.) Do you know what you are doing?
Favourite Toy:
AMD Athlon II X6 1090T 6-core, 16GB RAM, 12TB ZFS RAIDZ-2 Storage. Linux Centos 5.6 running KVM Hypervisor. Virtual Machines: Ubuntu, Mint, Solaris 10, Windows 7 Professional, Windows XP Pro, Windows Server 2008R2, DOS 6.22, OpenFiler

Re: vxvm:vxconfigd: ERROR: Cannot reset VxVM kernel: A virtual disk device is open
1) Is the above true? an EVA is involved?
Ans : The common storage connected to 4 nodes is a XP 1024 array.
2) Are you using AutoPath or SecurePath?
Ans : No
3) Is your environment fully supported by VxVM?
Ans : Yes
4. Are you licensed fully in VxVM (i.e. DMP is active?)
Ans : Yes I am using Storage Foundation Gold Key license which is a permanect one. DMP is active.
5.) Do you know what you are doing?
Ans : I am creating a VCS cluster having 4 nodes which will have access to sharedgs. On these sharedgs i will install oracle as database.
Thanks,
Novonil

Re: vxvm:vxconfigd: ERROR: Cannot reset VxVM kernel: A virtual disk device is open
You're environment it seems is NOT fully supported in the absence of that ASL -- which stands for Array Support Library. There should be one for the XP12024.. go to Symantec/Veritas Website and download it and install...
To check if you have the ASL...
swlist|grep -i VRTShp
Reboot your machine and check syslog/dmesg if you have a message their saying something like a supported array was recognized...
Also check licensing via "vxlicrep" and post your result...
