want to migrate os 10.20 to 11i

I want to do the migration as indicated above. I am new at these system. When doing lvdisplay, i saw that vg00 is being mirrored as 1 copied. How can I perform such migration and at the same time ensure that the mirror disk are in good condition. In addition, is there any hints or short cut on doing so? thank you very much

Re: want to migrate os 10.20 to 11i

you will really want to perform a cold install if at all possible, These forums are full of hints about performing such a change. As for the mirroring... you could actually use one of the disks that is part of the mirror as a back-out option if you fail horribly with the new install.

In any case, plan this for a cold install, having a good reovery (ignite) tape from the 10.20 system and good backups of everything else.

Go ahead and search this forum for HPUX cold install and upgrade to get some good information.

Hi,

The preferred method of moving to 11i from 10.20 is to cold-install. This means that the LVM subsystem that is used to create mirrors will be reloaded and hence you will lose the mirrors. You will need to recreate the mirrors once 11i is installed.

However, you may want to save the mirror disk as a backout plan. In case if you run into trouble with installing 11i, you can go back to 10.20 by booting from the mirror disk.

The success of migration is dependent on how well you plan ahead. This includes but not limited to

-Find the softwares installed and see if you have 11i versions of them
-Make sure your application is compatible with 11i
-Save the configuration of your system like volume groups, mapfiles, network configuration files, passwd and group, cronjobs etc., so that you can restore them on the new system
-Make sure your root disks are big enough to hold 11i requitements

etc.,

Try searching for the keyword "upgrade" in forums and you will get a lot of information.

You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try

Re: want to migrate os 10.20 to 11i

As recommended, cold install if at all possible, upgrades can be successful but require lots of experience. No matter what path to 11i you choose, the first thing you should look at is PDC firmware be sure it will support 11i. Then take a good look at your disk space, chances are your file systems sizes will need to be increased to support 11i. Thats one of the many benifits of a cold install, swinstall will set the default sizes for 11i, if the disk space is available. Use this opportunity to replace your VG00 disk(s) (18 or 36 GB), if your budget will allow. Ok after all those check out, make sure you have verified that "ALL" your critical business applications are known to work on 11i. Please use Ignite/UX just incase the wheels fall off and your need to revert back to 10.20. As mentioned you can boot off the other half of the mirror as well, but having more than one way back wont hurt. Use the following link to download Ignite: http://www.software.hp.com/products/IUX/download.html Also be sure to do a full backup using Fbackup or your utility of choice. ok if you are doing a cold install you want to save off some important config files, like /etc/rc.config.d, /etc/hosts, /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/passwd and /etc/group. save them some place like /var/tmp/HP_Install. Make mapfiles files of all non-vg00 volume groups using vgexport -p -v -s -m /var/tmp/HP_install/vg01.mapfile /dev/vg01
use vgimport -v -s -m /var/tmp/HP_install/vg01.mapfile /dev/vg01
This should get you off to a good running start, for more information use this link: http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-1827/5187-1827.html This is a very helpfull link and should help you have a successfull install.

Good luck

Re: want to migrate os 10.20 to 11i

All of the above plus.

Make an ignite backup tape, using make_tape_recovery or the 10.20 equivalent.

Make sure you can boot from this tape.

Interupt the boot at console, sea, bo p## ## being the number of the sequential access(tape device).

abort the ignite recovery once you're sure you can boot off the tape. On some older D boxes, you will need to disconnect fiber cables to boot off ignite, don't ask me why.

Go back, reboot 10.20 fbackup the whole box to another tape.

Now you are ready to proceed with a cold install or an upgrade. Anything goes wrong, insert ignite tape, wait three hours then restore data from fbackup tape.

Good luck.

Great handle btw, no relation to the singing group?
