We need a SAP compliant job scheduler

We just got rid of our existing job scheduler (the company shall remain nameless in order to prevent a libel suit) and are in the market for a new job scheduler. It needs to be:

HP-UX
SUN
NT

compliant and it needs to be SAP, HP Openview and ITO compatible under a Serviceguard environment. We would prefer that it run on an Oracle database. Personal recommendations are very welcome, salesmen will be tolerated. My offline address is pcourry@hns.com

Points *will* be awarded.

Re: We need a SAP compliant job scheduler

There is a product called Autosys. You can go for it if it is not the one what you were using.

Thanks,

Re: We need a SAP compliant job scheduler

Hi Paul,

We run Autosys ant it's working OK.
It uses an Oracle database and isn't too difficult to set up.
We have an Oracle/SAP/Legato/ITO/MCSG environment (like you) and are happy about the product.

I'd recommend it if it's not the one that you don't want to name, of course ;-)

Best regards,

Dan

PS: Autosys only supports the recent versions of Legato Networker, just in case you use it as backup software.

Dan, you will get assigned your points, but since I DON'T want a magic rabbit to appear just quite yet (a lot of people won't read the post then) I will award your points when the answers trickle off. Thanks!

Re: We need a SAP compliant job scheduler

Hi Paul,
Here is what I found at www.bmc.com:
http://www.bmc.com/products/productline.html?wpt=Enterprise+Production+Management&l=en&r=Americas&c=
INCONTROL[tm] for Production Management

INCONTROL for Production Management supplies production control and scheduling over a multitude of platforms from a
single point of management. Driven by business requirements, not technology limitations, INCONTROL for Production
Management propels the data center into a new level of cross-platform production management and automation. BMC
Software's solution for enterprise production management offers:

Comprehensive scheduling and production control
Reliability, scalability, availability and flexibility
Cross-platform interoperability and management-by-exception
Seamless integration with industry-standard applications
Support for over 20 platforms including OS/390, Unix, Windows NT, AS/400, SAP R/3, Tivoli, Unisys 2200 and Tandem

Comprehensive scheduling and production control
Stand-alone systems are history. The INCONTROL for Production Management consolidated active environment furnishes a
real-time graphical view of all connected systems and platforms across the enterprise. Enterprise Controlstation?
provides a focal point of control for managing and automating complex cross-platform environments. A common user
interface for all platforms ensures that production problems are detected and solved through a consistent
platform-independent management tool. This common interface reduces the learning curve, allowing fast implementation.

Reliability, scalability, availability and flexibility
The BMC Software solution for production management works in both centralized and distributed environments, using various
combinations of client/server technology. INCONTROL for Production Management delivers maximum scalability and
flexibility, regardless of hardware configuration or physical layout. The products bring reliability to the environment
by offering solutions that are fully functional on their own. Therefore, even in the event of a communication failure,
data integrity is ensured and workload interruptions are minimized.

Interoperability and management-by-exception
A user notification facility detects exception situations on the network immediately and displays them in an Alert
window. Additionally, color differentiation allows users to view both the location and severity of a problem at a glance.
Once a user is notified of a problem, all facets of the abnormality can be handled directly through drill-down menus.
Since exception management is automatic, personnel are free to perform other duties during production runs.

Integration with industry-standard applications and frameworks
INCONTROL for Production Management offers interface options with numerous third-party products and applications
including SAP R/3, Oracle Applications, PeopleSoft and Baan. Thus, users receive the most comprehensive automation
available for production control.

Tight integration is also available for BMC Software's PATROL? and COMMAND/POST?, as well as management frameworks such
as Tivoli, HP-OpenView and CA-Unicenter TNG. Additionally, INCONTROL for Production Management integrates with problem
tracking and management applications such as Remedy, Vantive and Info/Management.

CONTROL-M Option for R/3
CONTROL-M/Option for R/3 ensures automation and integration of busi-ness processes both within and out-side the SAP
environment.

Re: We need a SAP compliant job scheduler

There is a product called sysAdmiral which we evaluated but decided not to use (no need for it in our environment, cron is free). It has agents that run on multiple platforms, but the management server must be on NT. They had, I am fairly certain, specific hooks for integration with SAP.

Re: We need a SAP compliant job scheduler

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your comments. You are right, I only came back to this thread because there was no 'magic rabbit'. I guess that other users behave the same.

Anyway, this gives me an opportunity to provide you with some more info about the Autosys/Legato "issue".

Under HP-UX 10.20:
Legato 4.2 and 5.1 are supported with module 1.2.8
Legato 5.5 isn't supported (yet??)

Under HP-UX 11.0 (32 and 64 bit versions):
No version of Legato is supported :-((

I haven't got any date as to when HP-UX 11.0 could be supported....

Best regards,

Dan

Re: We need a SAP compliant job scheduler

I think there are only really two contenders maestro and autosys they are both great schedulers and provide the functionality required. I think HP tend to lean towards autosys for openview etc.

Have a look at

http://www.unix.hp.com/operating/hpux11/specials/power_program/pp/p/platinum.html

But in my opinion they both do a pretty good job with all the components that you require.

We even wrote our own front end to integrate into maestro using tk and it was very straight forward.

Re: We need a SAP compliant job scheduler

I'm not sure if it's SAP complient, We've been useing Express for unix by Openware. (formely Title software) It's been a pretty good product for our environment. It has a good interface, and a lot of functionality.

Re: We need a SAP compliant job scheduler

Paul, My company was in a similar boat as you, I don't know if this is still an issue, but we researched it heavily and narrowed it down to Tivoli, UC 4 and Sysadmiral. However, we discovered that tivoli no longer supports mpe, they sold that portion to another company, so we are not to big on them. When are budget opens up we are going with one of those, any adivice?

Re: We need a SAP compliant job scheduler

Paul,
Not sure if you're still looking for a job scheduler, but just in case, you might want to check out Dollar Universe (. It's a pretty good multi-platform scheduler that works well with SAP (I use it for all my SAP jobs >300 jobs/day and haven't had a problem yet). They are supported by HP and I think they're even Sun certified
Hope that helps.
