Hello,

Here's another possibility:

Good luck

Re: We need to write unix script guide

No link from me I'm afraid. I would say practice, practice & a bit more practice. Just try it, (on a test system). If you want sample scripts /sbin/init.d has a few.

Re: We need to write unix script guide

Not really help for writing a script but the easiest guide to use for basic information on the commands available for scripts is "Unix in a Nutshell" by Daniel Gilly from O'Reilly.

Its also one of the cheapest computer books on the market at only ??7.50 (If you are in the UK) $9.95 in the US.

Re: We need to write unix script guide

I'm going to give you a Plan B. If I were starting all over, I would learn only the bare minimum of shell and my main emphasis would be on Perl. If you choose this method, you essentially have no reason to learn sed, awk, or complex shell scripting techniques. I find that even most complex tasks that I once had to do in C, I can now do in Perl. The added benefit of this approach is that you now also have scripts which will run in the NT/Windows world as well. The bad news is that the learning curve is steeper.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: We need to write unix script guide

Hi

as Mr A Clay Stevensens said perl is the way to go this is becoming an industry standard so it would be much better to concentrate on the new rather than the old.

Of course with so many shell scripts out there requiring maintainence it doesn't hurt to learn some shell scripting too.

cheers
John.

Re: We need to write unix script guide

Hamdi,

I would also recommend that you look into learning Perl as it is easy to learn and is very powerful, however if you want to learn more about shell scripting here are a few links:

http://www.freeos.com/guides/lsst/

Hope that helps.

If you're interested in Perl you may wish to check out perlmonks.org (or .com) They have some very good tutorials that you may find helpful.
