WEB Server Image Performance

The developers are throwing back at us poor admins a question concerning image performance. We are using several A500 servers behind local directors for a web site. The new application/page will link to 150,000 to 1 million images for display on various pages. What would be my concerns here from an HP-UX Admin point of view. Should I attempt to keep the images local to each server or access them from a central point? How would you recommend attaching to this central point, NFS? Are there any system settings that I sould consider for the best out-the-gate performance? The images will be 8-15k each BTW.
Where wisdom is called for, force is of little use. --Of course, a hammer does wonders for relieving stress.
