Webjetadmin and hpnpd

I have had webjetadmin (not jetadmin) installed since the start on my N4000 11.0 box, recently we are getting a few error messages to root stating an "error 2" on 2-3 of our printers. I've read some of the past posts regarding file not found and print queue corrupted. I will be rebuiling the queues, but I am also seeing another symptom that may or may not be related. In the lp log file I see the message:

hpnpd is not running, no job monitor.

It is true, it is not. I've tried /sbin/init.d/webadmin start/stop, but it does not give an error messages nor does it start the process.

Help is appreciated (Promise I'll post what the final solution was!)

Re: Webjetadmin and hpnpd

Thanks for the links Sanjay, I beleive you provided the same ones in another response, I am not using CDE and the solutions in the first one - well I don't seem to have the files to test - possibly because it refers to jetadmin and that was never installed on this machine.

Re: Webjetadmin and hpnpd

Hi Tracey,

I'm sorry if you had asked this question earlier and if if i had posted the same answer before, but that didn't solve your problem. I don't have webjetadmin installed opn any system. I'm still using jetadmin. It had been so loyal that i hate to move to webjetadmin. However i'm in the process of getting hold of another test system and i can load whatever i want on that. So if you don't get a solution and if i can get some other solution / suggestion i'll post an answer later on.

Thanks

Re: Webjetadmin and hpnpd

Tracey,
Take a look at this link. Perhaps the "product update" may help.

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/networking/support_doc/bpj07059.html

Also have a look at the hpnpd and hpnpadmin manpages. Does the hpnpd exist in the /sbin/init.d directory? If so, try starting/stoping it from there versus trying the webjetadmin start/stop.

Re: Webjetadmin and hpnpd

Dave,

Thanks for the link, the product update sounded good, but the page cannot be found. I also tried the jetdirect for 11.0, and the page is there, I am downloading it to see if that will help.

I looked for the /sbin/init.d/hpnpd, and it does not exist on my system.

Re: Webjetadmin and hpnpd

Hi Tracy,

This is what i just did on a 10.20 box.

Downloaded the hp jetdirect printer installer for unix from the site,

http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swdl.pl?c=ja242&i=ja242en&p=hpjdprinte18923&n=hp+jd+printer+installer+for+hp-ux+10.x

Downloaded the SD install file and installed on my system. Once installed, ran /opt/hpnpl/bin/hppi

Select 1 to configure spooler --> add printer --> added network printer --> exit

configure printer as default , started spooler , test printout tested okay. I was not required to start any other process. ps -ef does not show any hpnpd process.

You can download the 11.0 SD install file from this link,

http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swdl.pl?c=ja243&i=ja243en&p=hpjdprinte18922&n=hp+jd+printer+installer+for+hp-ux+11.x

There are three files *.UNX under /opt/hpnpl which might be useful to you.

Hope this helps.

Re: Webjetadmin and hpnpd

Tracey,

Sanjay sent you a link with the HP JetDirect Printer installer. That is the "supported" UNIX utility. WebJetadmin is no longer supported on either HP-UX or Solaris. For information, see this URL:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/networking/support_doc/bpj06765.html

All the best,

Re: Webjetadmin and hpnpd

Thanks for all the links, I installed the jetdirect installer, but of course it didn't help me with the one problem of the error message in the log file. Job monitor is not really needed in my printers, so I turned off that option in the printer configuration files. So that message has not gone away.

As to the first problem, I will only know if I get the error 2's in a few days. I suspect however that I will still get them since the printers that are getting these errors had job monitor turned off already.

Re: Webjetadmin and hpnpd

I'm still occasionally getting the error no 2 messages, but now only about 1 every other day. I can live with it, but still am curious as to what the problem might be.

As a sysadmin, I'd like to see no errors, I know it is not always feasible, but errors really annoy me.

Re: Webjetadmin and hpnpd

When I was getting error 2 messages, I turned off "job monitor".
Pull up the printer in jetadmin or hppi. select the options and turn off the job monitor.
Perhaps that will work for you as well.
