Hi
The NMID is an index into structures
within the kernel which are used to
operate the network interfaces. The
index and the structures are initialized
during system startup. The first ones
are the ppl related ni interfaces. As
nni defaults to 2, the list looks as
follows:
NMID Usage
1 ni
2 ni
the PPA just repalce the NMID

Re: what do NMID, PPA mean?
hi,
PPA is physical point of attachment.
NMID is network management ID.
I think that these are two numbers used by os to manage NIC.
for example about PPA:
the name lan1, for example, means that the device uses ethernet encapsulation and is attach to the PPA1.
snap1, instead, means that the device uses IEEE 802.3 encapsulation and is attach to the PPA1.
A single device may have multiple encapsulation method.
The ethernet encapsulation and IEEE 802.3 encapsulation are two (of four) different version of the ethernete frame.
