what happend to hp-ux 11.0

Hi together

I am about to migrate from hp-ux 10.20 to hp-ux 11.??? But before I want to make a clear decision whether to go to 11.0 or 11.i !
After one day on hp's internet sites I somehow got the impression that hp-ux 11.0 has disappeared from the scene. Whenever you approach to the unix OS sites you are only introduced to hp-ux 11.i. Now I know a lot about 11.i (there are so may pdf) - but so less about 11.0.

Now may questions:
- Is 11.0 an alternative to 11.i or is 11.0 superseded by 11.i ?
- What will be the outlook on these OSs ?
- Who would prefere 11.0 to 11.i and why ?
- (Why recommends "eds" 11.0 rather than 11.i to operate unigraphics cad software on ?)

Thanks for any advises.

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

There's little difference between the two. 11i is just 11.0 with some updates and some more "e-software" bundled in. I usually load 11i just because it's support life will likely exceed that of 11.0.

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

Hello,

Rest assured, HP-UX 11.00 is still alive and well for the time being. 11i is the newest version, thus HP's marketing for it. 11i superceeds 11.00, but hasn't replaced it (there are many who still use 10.20).

as for your last bullet question, most likely the reason is is that the cad software hasn't been developed to/perfected on 11i yet.

Hope this helps

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

Hi Klaus:

11.0 is still quite viable, and in fact, has no announced date for discontinuence:

http://www.software.hp.com/RELEASES-MEDIA/history/slide2.html

Release 11i (a.k.a. 11.11 or >) is simply the current release and is more feature-rich:

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

From what I have seen, 11i was released initially to mean internet, but that has been replaced with Itanium.

Since you have the choice, I would upgrade to 11i, that will save you having to do that sooner or later.

thank you all for your estimated comments so far. Now I see much clearer.
I'll keep that case still open. Any further notes are welcomed.

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

Hi Klaus,

just one more thought.....

HP-UX 11.i will be the only choice for the new processor generation, called IA64 or Merced. These will be HPs only processors (new ones) from the year 2004 on, which is not too far away in my opinion.

Allways stay on the bright side of life!

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

Hi, many of your questions have been answered above.

- Is 11.0 an alternative to 11i or is 11.0 superseded by 11.i ? HP-UX 11i is the latest version of 11.00
- What will be the outlook on these OSs ? The support will end for HP-UX 11.00 earlier than for 11i
- Who would prefere 11.0 to 11i and why ? In general it depends on what software you are running & how "up-to-date" you need to be.
- (Why recommends "eds" 11.0 rather than 11.i to operate unigraphics cad software on ?) I think this is the crux of the problem. EDS/unigraphics have probably only compiled their software for HP-UX 11.00. It should still work on HP-UX 11i *BUT* EDS may not support it with the caveat that it has not been tested/compiled on HP-UX 11i. This being the case, you really need to do what EDS say, as if there is a problem with unigraphics they may insist that you downgrade to HP-UX 11.00 which will be a problem for two reasons
- HP-UX is only backward compatable, so any software developed on 11i may not finction on 11.00!!!
- The outages to do this will be quite large

As & when EDS support unigraphics on 11i then you can upgrade (you may find that they already do with a later version of their code).

I had a similar problem with ABACUS & SDRC Ideas, HP-UX 9.x -> 10.20

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

Hi Klaus

As we are 100% HP-UX 10.20 at present I had the same questions and initially I drawed up plans to test both 11.00 and 11i. However after attending the HP-UX 11i workshop course I quickly came to the conclusion that there was little point in upgrading to 11.00 in preference to 11i as 11i is really the latest version.

There are some extras added with 11i which for immediate use are just nice to haves but as theres no extra charge you might as well have them.

One thing you should be carefull of though is hardware compatibility as some of the older servers will have limitations under 11i that they don't have under 11.00 (for instance an EISA 100VG Lan card on a D370 is supported under 11.00 but not 11i and I believe there are issues with some Fibre cards on K series)

A search of the postings on this forum should reveal these however.

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

I have avoided 11i for a couple of reasons. 1) It forces you to install Apache Web Server, which could be a security hole, and which I do not need for my Database Server machines. 2) It no longer has kernel templates for Database Server Machines. 3) It seems to require more resources than 11.
If you need to run a webserver than 11i could be acceptable.

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

There are a lot of problems when upgrading from 10.20 to 11.0. I strongly recommend a cold install followed by an importing of your data disks.

I did 4 upgrades from 10.20 to 11.00. Each failed several times. Each failure resulted in an unbootable system disk. I had to restore from backup to get my systems back. When I finally got a successful upgrade, it took 24 to 28 hours to complete (for EACH system).

Since then, we created a golden image of a v11.0 system using ignite. We ignited all our 10.20 systems to 11.0. Each system took less than 4 hours.

hai

11i has been rated as the best unix flavour by the Brown unix foroum.. the best thing about 11i is that it has a very stable kernel

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

Just some further information regarding 11 v 11i

11i has some unique features within the kernel that allow some dynamic changes to it (meaning you don't have to reboot)

11i requires a larger lvol1 and lvol3 volumes for /stand and / so bear this in mind if your thinking of starting with 11 and then perhaps upgrading to 11i

If some software gets loaded using the "enterprise" version, simply just remove it. This means if you don't want items such as apache or samba (CIFS) and the like. (some of these can actually be removed at the beginning of the installation)

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UPGRADE! DO A COLD INSTALL and once your finished, create a 'make_recovery tape'

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

Since 11.0 happens to support the product, I suggest loading it. If you have sandboxes, I would test out 11.i there.

If you patch 11.i even if it works initially, it may not work later. Some of the Boeing Cad products did that to me when I was at NASA.

I recommend 11.i only if you MUST use it for INTERNET services.

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

Hello!

The 11i is more newest version, have more tools
that came out of the box.
If you look to the feature and see that you
will buy more servers and station from HP
with new technologys of processors so better
to start to use 11i because you will see that
they would work only with 11i.

Re: what happend to hp-ux 11.0

The differences have been explained well.

Recommendations:

If your hardware can handle it, I'd go with 11i.

The reason is simply longer support cycle. As the latest release 11i will be supported and have many users for at least three years longer than 11.00

The obvious downside is that 11i does use more resources and some things will be slower on it.

I think this is outweighed by features especially dynamic kernel parameters and the stability of the release.
