what is dce/dced used for

hey i can see that we have the dced running on our hpux, i didnt really understand the usage of it, when reading the man page. Can anyone tell me what it is used for in practis and if it can be closed. We have thme running on nodes in service guard clusters

Hi Simon,

if i don't go wrong "dce" is Desktop Common Environment i.e. graphical enviroment used in hp-ux.
So "dced" maybe is his daemon.

DCE = Distributed Computing Enviroment, nothing to do with CDE.

dced is not normally running unless the host is part of a DCE cell. Most systems however will run rpcd in it's place, the processes are the same as you can see from the manapage.

I'd advise leaving it alone, swintsall amongst others use it for communication etc.

ok. Well i tried to close the daemon and after that runned swinstall, it was running ok. the rpc (portmapper) are not running.

There is a man page for dced(1m).

You were thinking of CDE, a different English ordering.
