I believe that is a software product that runs on multiple platforms, but that one can buy it from HP for installation on HP-UX servers.
What does it do? I think it has something to do with communicating with PCs.. Like PC-NFS or something like that?

Re: What is Samba?
Samba is a piece of software that allows files to be shared between unix and Windows. We use it for exactly that purpose.
Good reasons for using it are that it works and most importantly, it is free.
Other prodcuts include DiskAccess but you have to buy that.
Take a look at http://samba.mirror.ac.uk/samba/samba.html
or go to www.samba.org and choose your nearest site.
Cheers
Keely

Re: What is Samba?
So, Should I download Samba from the GNU or Wisconsin site, or should I install the free HP product, CIFS?

Re: What is Samba?
If you want a version of Samba that is supported by HP, then CIFS/9000 is available from http://software.hp.com and is free (A.01.09.04). The HP version will generally be behind the open source Samba in terms of the version number.
On the other hand if you're not worried about HP support (ie you want to use this forum, or the samba.org forums for support), and want the absolute latest version or want to compile it yourself then open source Samba is available from http://www.samba.org
The end decision is yours, I hope this helps ;)

Darren

Re: What is Samba?
I use samba on my linux box at home to share files with other PC's on my network. I'm sure there are several other products out there to accomplish this but Samba seems to be the most common and is included with most Linux distributions. In the past I have had difficutly configuring it because the tools to do so at the time were not very intuitive. Now many of the tools for setting up Samba are very easy to use.
More information about Samba can be found at:

Re: What is Samba?
I've attempted to install the latest version from samba.org and also HP's CIFS and found the CIFS to be much easier.
Good Luck!
