Hi folks,
We have a workstation that used to use NIS to manange logins that we need to convert to a standalone system. We've disabled NIS in /etc/rc.config.d/namesvrs. When we try to reboot in normal mode (without going into single user) it always hangs on some startup daemon. At first we broke out of the hangup (by hitting the break key) which takes you to a login prompt at which we had no luck of logging in. It's like it is still trying to read the NIS passwords or some other passwd file besides /etc/passwd. We've also tried adding another user and logging in with that user (which does show up in /etc/passwd) and it still doesn't allow login.
What else needs to be done?
thanks so much!

Re: what steps to uninstall NIS
Check /etc/nsswitch.conf.

Solution
Work this issue backwards by using the configuration guide to unconfigure it. By this approach you are sure to find/check all the files involved for NIS.
