Did we need remove the RAID setting from controller card ?

I got a question mentioned above. A rx3600 sever which be built RAID1 by the controller card. For the purpose to avoid SPOF, my customer want to change the RAID to software mirroring by mirrorDisk. So did any removing work is needed to do on the controller by this condition ?

A server itself is somehow always an SPOF, so IMHO it doesn't really matter if you use hardware or software mirrors.
Since it is a kind of pain to change a SAS boot disk in LVM mirrors, I would suggest to stay with your current configuration.

I have same feeling about this question. But as a presales supportor, I must to answer it. Maybe the customer have some other reason to do this change.
Are you familiar with it which is more prior when hardware/software is set on one server at same time ?

To remove the hardware RAID you need to delete it - including data. As long as you don't mirror to an external disk you change absolutely nothing. If you LVM miror 2 internal disks, the controller SPOF is still the same. If you need to replace a disk someday, it will always get a new device file. This is where the trouble starts. You need to "somehow" remove the old disk from the LVM configuration or redirect the new to the old device file. If the server was rebootet with the dead disk, this may be almost impossible.


For this reason I prefer the hardware RAID. Replace a bad disk and you are done.
