Re: Which backup software is top!

Iam quite happy with the responses. I choose to take training of OmniBack II.

Thanks for your time.

Re: Which backup software is top!

Perhaps someone could comment on their experiences with Arcserve Enterprise Edition. I'm using it on several NT servers and would like to include our HP9000 for standardization.

Re: Which backup software is top!

I has had experince with Legato and Netbackup and
OB II.
My ranking is the following;
1. OBII
2. Netbackup
3. Legato

OBII is easy to use, and has a clear user interface. You can use in it cluster environment.I had problems
only with database reduction, but it occurs with an old version. (2.5)
And the doc is quite good.

Netbackup
A bit complicated but usable.
The user interface and configuration a bit complicated, but usable.
It could use in cluster enviroment.
Te doc is usable.

Legato
The user interface is complicated.A lot of terms: group, pools, storage node
You could not use in cluster environment. The index files
grows without bound you have to reduce it manually.
Horrible ...

The doc isn't very good.

Re: Which backup software is top!

I would say: Veritas Netbackup, specially if you have a multiplatform environment, we have Tru64, HPUX, Solaris, Linux, AIX, W2K. Another factor is the Storage architecture that you have, if you are running in a SAN, you can do a serverless and netless backups with Netbackup, if you have FC-Tapes, and FC-Disk, the data flow goes directly from the disk to the tape, using the FC-bandwith, no processing on the server.

Re: Which backup software is top!

I've used Veritas and Omniback II. I think Omniback II is by far the better product. From ease of use for beginners to advanced functions. I'm using Netbackup now(different company) and I just don't think it's as robust or as user friendly.

Re: Which backup software is top!

We have Arcserve running on our NT machines and we got the UNIX agent for it, to run the UNIX backup on the NT server. It was okay, but we had a large number of problems with it, like it flipping out when a workstation was powered off, for whatever reason. We also had a large number of problems with our RAID drive crashing during backup. I realize that, more than likely, the fault was with the drive controller (which we recently fixer), but I'd still avoid using it. This is just for the UNIX agent on NT; I don't know about the Arcserve that runs directly on UNIX (asked but couldn't get much info from them about it).

Re: Which backup software is top!

Hi,
I think Omniback is the big winner ;)
But for smaller, standalone systems don't forget about fbackup (simple, standard, free!, ...)
And tar !! for its mega-compatibility, would not use it for everyday backup but anyway.

regards,
Thierry.
All unix flavours are exactly the same . . . . . . . . . . for end users anyway.
