Which lan interface to boot off?

I defined the dbprofile. Now when I do:

lanboot select -dn profile1

I see all these MAC addresses. I only have 2 core IO network drops on this machine, why is it showing 6 and which one do I choose?
(Although it may have another network card)

Shell> lanboot select -dn profile1
01 Acpi(HWP0002,100)/Pci(2|0)/Mac(0016353EBD9C)
02 Acpi(HWP0002,100)/Pci(2|1)/Mac(0016353EBD9D)

Re: Which lan interface to boot off?

The sompleton way is to boot from each one until you find one that works..

Re: Which lan interface to boot off?

It's trying to something, being stuck here for the last 10 minutes.
Should I stop this and try another interface?
Is it supposed to be waiting like that?

Re: Which lan interface to boot off?

All the wrong ones errored out immediately -

However, the only good interface hangs right here. Any idea how long I should wait?

Re: Which lan interface to boot off?

It should not be more that 5 minutes.

You may be running into an old lan config issue ( just maybe ).

There is a way to force the booted lan interfaces to 100FD, if they error to HD then you will be waiting forever.

CHeck here..

Re: Which lan interface to boot off?

How "far" from the boot server is the system, and potentially how "lossy" the path between the two? TFTP is not known to deal with latency well, and it deals with packet losses even worse.

Depending on the sort of system you have, you may have virtual media support, which may work "better" for some definition of better - again depending on your network. It won't use TFTP and should be a bit more robust in the face of network issues.

As for FD vs HD etc - IIRC the interfaces at EFI will default to autoneg. Personally I know of no way to disable that (nor should one for gigabit interfaces). My inclination would be to suggest that if the switch is hardcoded to set it to autoneg. If the switch cannot correctly autoneg, consider replacing the switch - http://www.hp.com/go/procurve :)

Re: Which lan interface to boot off?

Did you read the warning about multiple console devices?

Use

conconfig

to check and adjust!

Your servers has already booted from the kernel!

Hope this helps!

I don't get it.

How do I do that without bring the machine I am trying to Ignite up? It's currently down.

It's on the same subnet. And the interface I am using is Gig. Is that the source of the problem?

Re: Which lan interface to boot off?

This is the serial console over MP (primary).

"Does this look right?"

It depends on what connection do you use.

Hope this helps!

Re: Which lan interface to boot off?

Do you mean it booted from the Ignite image kernel on the Ignite-UX server or do you mean it booted from the kernel on the local hard drive?

Am I making the network connection and reaching the Ignite server?

Launching Rel_B.11.23/IINSTALL

at this point the install kernel is downloaded and ready to boot.

From now on all the output goes to the primary console, until this point the output goes to all devices.

Next message should be

Re: Which lan interface to boot off?

Shalom,

I contact my network group and they tell me which interface is hooked up.

If I'm feeling really smart, I use tcpdump or wireshark on another system to look for MAC addresses that match this display and therefore pic my interface.

If I have plenty of time, I use the aforementioned boot until it works technique, though that can waste time as it always seems the LAST one I pick works.

You might want to actually work with networking and choose the best interface based on how you plan to use the system. Do you plan to use Auto Port Aggregation for example.

It is also nice to have networking and boot disk on a different I/O card so you can hot swap a failed card without taking your system down.

Hi

I've attached a Custom Confirguration Guide for Ignite. While reading it discusses and old war cry, autonegotiation of speed and duplex for NIC's during the installation, and after the kernel.

No.

If you use the COM1 built-in serial port you are NOT connected to the console!

You need to use the MP console port!!!

Re: Which lan interface to boot off?

Serial A is the only option for me, given that I am using remote console. It is working, after all, it only stops working after a while when I get to that line, after it downloads the kernel.
