Re: which to use? FastEthernet or Ethernet

Hi

10BASE-2 Ethernet

10Mbits per second
Max cable length is 185 metres
4 repeaters - 5 segments
50-ohm thin coaxial , terminated at both ends

10Base-5 Ethernet (Thick ethernet)

10Mbits per second
500 metres cable length
Thick 50 ohm cable

10Base-T Ethernet

Twisted pair cable
Max length is 100 metres
10 Mbits per second

100Base-T Fast Ethernet
100 Mbits per second
cable length 100 metres

Hope this helps

Re: which to use? FastEthernet or Ethernet

FastEthernet is Cisco's term for a 100 Meg full duplex capable 100baseT connection. Most routers come with a basic 10baseT 10 Meg as a standard. For the router's use this is usually good enough if it is connecting to a T1 Serial link. If you have lots of money fastethernet is nice to have but not essential for most routers with slow serial connections. If you are doing a lot of switching between local LANs or you want to use VLANs then you do need to spring for the FastEthernet. An interesting option which just became available is the 16 port 10/100 switch card which you can put in the newer routers. This is actually cheaper than buying some of the 2 or 4 port FastEthernet cards tho a little less flexible since you will need to use VLANs to get the same isolation.

If you are designing a new LAN then you definitely want a switch with 10/100 capability.

Hi

You may also look at this

Ofcopurse the FASR ETHERNET is the best choice between the two as it has better range and also a better through put.
