Who is coming to HPWorld2002?

I have been asked to start a thread so that we Forum Members can gauge how many of us are going to be there. Now, if you ain't coming I'm sorry but I really don't care why you ain't coming; you can start your own thread for that. Typically, we try to get together sometime during the first evening at one of the hotel restuarant/bars. I'm trying to get an idea of who is staying where and a volunteer to be a Social Chairperson. For some reason, my people skills limit my capacity in that role.

I feel I must warn those who plan to attend that we may have a tough time finding turnip greens and cornbread; I didn't find turnip green number one in Chicago last year and I don't hold out much hope for LA. My prospects for proper food will be much better in Atlanta next year.

I look forward to seeing both old and new friends this year.

Regards, Clay

Re: Who is coming to HPWorld2002?

I guess I'd better be there since so many people are signed up for my seminar. 8-)

Nope, no turnip greens but I'm sure you'll find some great quesadea, a non-fat vanilla latte with cinnammon no whip, and calamari with de-ionized, oxygenated Penta water with a lemon twist. We must do lunch one day.

Re: Who is coming to HPWorld2002?

Clay -
I am relatively new (1 yr.) to HP-UX, having spent the last 27 in the mainframe world and would be very interested in responses to this thread as to the benefits of attending this conference. Besides the obvious networking benefits, what should one expect?
I have followed your responses to many forum questions, respect your opinions and experience, and know you will not be flaming me for this response (other than "use the search function").

Re: Who is coming to HPWorld2002?

0kay Dave, I'll make an attempt to cover the highlights. First of all, nobody cares about how you dress. If you are arriving on Sunday before the seminars begin on Monday, I suggest that you avoid the Monday morning rush and register Sunday afternoon. It should take you less than 2 or 3 minutes on Sunday afternoon but could take much longer the next morning.

If your duties primarily pertain to HP-UX, I urge you to consider
either Seminar 1 (what's come to be known as the 'Bill & Dave Show') or Seminar 2 with Stephen Ciullo. I usually alternate between those each year and I never fail to learn something new. If you attend Stephen Ciullo's session, a very good question to ask is "How do I kill a zombie?". He really likes that question.

My favorite sessions tend to be the roundtables and panel discussions especially when the discourse gets rather intense.

I also urge you to consider attending a few sessions that you might not normally consider. For example, if you consider yourself a techie type then it's good to attend a few management sessions; the converse is equally encouraged.
It's good at times to hear from management types what they expect and it's good to let them know what techie's expect and like as well. It's especially good to be able to hear and voice these issues in a 'safe' environment.

Unlike many symposia, you can almost always squeeze into any session; there may be standing room only but usually in that case another session can be scheduled at a later time.

The Expo itself is usually fun and informative at the same time. That is usually one of the few places that you can actually see divers equipment brands connected to HP boxes. The little booth in which you get to grab money was a big hit last year; I hope it's back.

You should plan to attend at least the Opening Keynote session; I'll admit it's a bit of an HP Pep Rally but you do tend to learn about future company trends.

Go to the parties and receptions; you will meet your peers from around the world.

One of my favorite aspects of HPWorld is that it is not an HP function but rather an Interex function. There is a lot to be said for a show that's managed by what is essentially a user's group. When you see Interex Board members be sure to let them know what you like aboutt this year's HPWorld and what you don't; they really appreciate that kind of feedback.

I'm sure that there are others who are much more eloquent than I who can add to this.

Regards, Clay

Clay,

That's one of the best advertisements for, and introductions to, HPWorld that I've heard. If I hadn't been signed up before, I definitely would be now.

See you there,
Pete

Re: Who is coming to HPWorld2002?

Hi (again) Clay,

Sorry - I forgot to mention that we (wife Jil and I), are staying across the street from the Westin - at the Marriott. We're Marriott bigots and, as near as I can tell, it should be "right across the street" - I hope.

I'd probably better pass on the Social Chairperson role. It sounds like we may have similar people skills.

And turnip greens, I must admit, I've never even had an urge to look for - must be something to do with the fact that I'm one of those "damn Yankees"!!

Looking forward to it,
Pete

Re: Who is coming to HPWorld2002?

Hi Clay,

Well I plan on being there too! Looks like I'm staying at the Westin Bonaventure.

I agree with you ... chances for some good greens, with onions and maybe a hamhock thrown in there .. (is it lunch yet...) is not lookin good.

Nothing I could add to your Conference review...last year was my first & I abosolutely loved it. Especially being able to meet the face behind the answers !

Excellent, Mary. I think that I know how to spell C/C++ but I'm sure that there will be others there who can exceed my teeny-tiny, insignificant knowledge of the language.

It didn't look like I would be coming, but at the last minute things changed!

I'll be there, at least for the Expo if not the conference.

Re: Who is coming to HPWorld2002?

It appears that our Social Chairperson, Rita, has selected the Western Barnadventure BarnaVista Lounge as a gathering place Sunday night. I'll arrive in LA early Sunday afternoon. Rita and I are going to meet in the BonaVista Lounge about 6:00 PM and then go to the registration. I suggest that everyone register Sunday evening to avoid the hassle (not to be confused with Bill Hassell) that will surely greet you Monday morning.

See you there, Clay

Re: Who is coming to HPWorld2002?

Can't make it on Sunday, we're coming in on Monday early.
But I guess I'll see you guys on Wednesday night. "...We'll have some nice giveaways, including a Jornada 567 handheld PC, and have the chance to hear a few words from valued community member Clay Stephenson! Also, HP's Jeff Siegle will be on-hand to provide insights on the ITRC as a community both today and going forward...."
So Clay, whose bringing the rotten tomatoes?

See you next week.
