A really good book that covers memory and processes would be "HP-UX Tuning and Performance" by Robert F Sauers and Peter S Weygant. You can find more info on this at http://www.hp.com/hpbooks/prentice/ptr_0131027166.html

you could tstart with the "classical" books about AT&T UNIX System V Rel.3, and BSD UNIX 4.2/4.3, from Maurice Bach, and Mike Leffler/Kirk McKusick et al, resp.
