Re: Why is understanding the startup and shutdown process important for system administration?
If you never plan to reboot the machine, have the machine reboot, or restart any service on your machine, then yes, you don't need to know anything about startup scripts.
Unfortunately, the reality is that "stuff happens". If you don't understand the startup or shutdown of a machine, you will have problems at some point in your career.

Re: Why is understanding the startup and shutdown process important for system administration?
With being disrespectful, you NEED to take some formal, UNIX training classes.
You might begin here:
http://education.itresourcecenter.hp.com/TrainerII/en_US/index.jsp
You also have a VAST array of FREE, EXCELLENT documentatino at your disposal:
http://docs.hp.com/index.html
This Forum is not meant to be a substitute for basic education.
Regards!

Open a book, study it, learn it....and stop expecting everyone to give you the answers to tests or do your job.
Helping is what we do here.....not this !!!!!

I agree 100% with what Rita says, this forum is basically when you run into a road block and should be expecting a line by line command help or document help.

Re: Why is understanding the startup and shutdown process important for system administration?
As per all the above answers everything is true.
"Why is understanding the startup and shutdown process important for system administration? "
The term 'System Administartion' , answer your question. Isn't it!.
check this out:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_administrator
As per the standard roles and responsibilities if a SA, you need to understand the startup and shutdown process.
For example: you you applied a patch to the system, and rebooted the system, And the system didnot come up on next boot !!??
What you will do.! So if you know what are the stages involved in the boot process, you can find out where it has stuckup., and further steps can be taken accordingly.
Check this link:

And check the system startup and shutdown chapters,
(And dont forget to assign points,)
Cheers,
Raj.
