Hi,

Could some one tell me ....why root fs should be contigous..?

From the man page of lvchange:

"...Set a contiguous allocation policy. Physical extents are allocated in ascending order without any gap between adjacent extents and all extents are contained in a single physical volume."

Boot loader must find the files in a "fixed" location on the same physical disk, especially when booting into special modes like LVM maintenance mode.

Why should root be contiguous?

Because daddy said so.

HP has strong reasons to make it so. One of these is the ability to do diagnostics when booting into single user mode.

If root is spread in several locations on the disk, it makes single user and lvm mode impossible to do and compromises the ability to mount the root file system in this context.
