why should I run an informix db on 11i?

Hello everyone and good morning.

I need to find some reports or data. On why I shuold run an informix db on 11i instead of linux. My shop is trying to go to a linux db solution using hdr to have a backup of each db server. But so far it is not working too well. The reason they want to go to linux is cost. Me personaly I would perfer to go to an 11i solution running advanced online jfs. But I need to get some good data information / user knowledge / benchmarks on why 11i would be better then linux please post them.

Now if you think the linux can do the job as good as 11i. Please let me know that too. Because from what I have seen so far with the linux I need some convincing.

Thanks
Richard

Re: why should I run an informix db on 11i?

Richard,

To me the true cost of a Linux system comes in the administration end. With HP-UX, you get everything neatly packaged and it all works together nicely. With Linux, it can take weeks to install on a new box because of driver issues, etc.

Then you have the reliability issues of the Intel platform. I would not consider trusting my database to a Linux platform. Besides, if it's of any size, you've got to figure out how to attach a significant amount of storage to a Linux box: back to the drivers issue.

I wish you luck in convincing the "powers that be" that they would be shooting themselves in the foot.

To be blunt, any manager who makes a decision like this purely on the basis of cost is an idiot. Of course if he's getting similar functionality and reliability and lower TCO as well then its worth looking into.

Who's ging to be responsible for your Linux software/hardware support? If its not the same person I'd be *very* worried about buck-passing etc.

Of course if you can buy the *whole solution* off IBM (informix/linux/hardware & all support etc.) then it might be worth considering (sorry HP - guess I shouldn't really say that on your site!)

As to why to run it on HPUX - one word 'proven'

Ask your vendors for case studies/reference sites for informix on linux - how many can they provide???

Re: why should I run an informix db on 11i?

Hi Richard

we had Informix database running on Linux( for testing of our product)it was fine. It was as cool as on HP-UX or on Solaris or on AIX.

If you could get going any databases on Linux, it works similar to on any other platforms. The only issue is speed, if you are not concerned about the speed, i prefer Linux than Hp-UX

Re: why should I run an informix db on 11i?

From the release notes :

3. The following features are not supported in this release because of
Operating System limitation :
- The Affinity feature that allows the pinning of a CPU VP process to a
processor in a multi-cpu configuration
- Kernel AIO is not available in Linux 2.2.12, so Informix Dynamic Server
does not support asynchronous input-output.
- The OnSNMP utility
- The operating system audit feature

expecially Kernel AIO (which is supported on 11i ) should be a discussion point.
