Will the HP-UX server restart automatically after some days? If we have not restarted.

Hi All,

We have not restarted one HP-UX server for 500 and more days.

My friend told me that it will be rebooted after some days (999 days) if you are not going for reboot of the server.

My Questions:

1)Is it true?

2)If yes, when it will reboot? what is the default days?

Senthil,

> My friend told me that it will be rebooted after some days (999 days)

- This is not true, unless you use the reboot or shutdown command it is not going to reboot , or if there is anything setup in crontab for reboot , it is not going to reboot automatically.

I don't believe it's true that HP-UX somehow reboots on it's own just because there have been too many days without a reboot. 999 days is bit less than 3 years, so there are definitely servers running HP-UX with longer uptime than that. Your friend probably made a joke.

Hi Senthil,

No a HPUX system will not reboot after a number of days.

I dont think thats true. Also the number 999 looks so small.

You friend wants you to reboot the server so that his server has a more
uptime than yours :)

Its time for you to trick him :)

There have been firmware bugs where if it is up more than a year or 500 days?, you started getting syslog errors and you wished it rebooted.

So if it is this thread, it's kind of true:
syslog growing with vmunix messages

You would receive some false events on a server running more than 500 days, which i have encountered in my set-up.The events may be related to FC card etc..

Patches are available to get rid of the false events also. But i have never encountered a server going down after long run.

Shalom,

1) No. I've seen systems remain running over 1000 days, though that violates recommendations and good practices for system security patching.

Re: Will the HP-UX server restart automatically after some days? If we have not restarted.

Hi,

Actually its a yes.

There was a bug, I think it was in HP-UX 10.20, that caused a system to reboot after x number of days. (fairly large number of days, i.e. 200+)

Cant be bothered to look it up, but the patch, that solved the problem, would probably have been included in the latest GR patchbundle that came out for HP-UX 10.20.
