Will upgrading from 11.0 to 11.i place additional demands on server?

Hi All,
In the planning stage of upgrading our rp5450 from 11.0 to 11.i. We run a unidata database on this server. 2 procs and 2gig ram. I've noticed on occasion that one of the procs will be 90% + during heavy use. Will 11.i place more demands on the server? Do I need to feed it more ram? This server will be replaced in 6 - 8 months, so I don't want to spend a bunch on it.
Thanks,
Rocky

11i is bigger, more complex, more stable, and yes uses more resources.

We are running it on rp5450 servers with big Oracle databases.

Because the kernel is tuned differently and other factors you may actually experience better performance under 11i because the OS has many performance enhancements.

I think you can safely do the upgrade, though cold install is more reliable. If the server is gong to be replaced, why spend any time upgrading it? Why not plan for and do the upgrade/migration onto the new hardware?

Hi rocky,
Probably you may not accept this one but ugradation doesn't go smooth many times and instead cold installation is recommended.

Suggest you to go thr' the threads below in detail which discusses the same issue:

Hope this helps.

Re: Will upgrading from 11.0 to 11.i place additional demands on server?

I seriously doubt that upgrading will make your CPU usage go down. The thing you need to look at is what exactly is using those resources? Are there lots of udt processes? Do you have any phantom processes that are using lots of resources.

RAM MIGHT help, but there is not guarantee there either.

If this machine is going to be replaced soon, I honestly wouldn't do too much.

If CPU usage is only getting to 90% then I wouldn't worry too much anyway. I wouldn't really worry unless you see usage hitting 100% regularly.

Re: Will upgrading from 11.0 to 11.i place additional demands on server?

Thanks for the replies - I'm planning on doing a cold install. CPU peaks when the programmer is doing large queries. I wanted to do the install of 11.i for the experience. I have a support vendor waiting in the wings in case I totally hose the install. I keep two recent make_tape_recovery tapes and a full nightly backup, so if needed someone can help resue me.
Thanks,

Re: Will upgrading from 11.0 to 11.i place additional demands on server?

Minimum RAM for 11.0 is 64MB, but 512MB is the minimum recommended RAM. Minimum RAM for 11.11 (11i) OE is 256MB with 512GB or more greater recommended. 2GB is a reasonable start, but more may be useful, particularily with 11i.

Re: Will upgrading from 11.0 to 11.i place additional demands on server?

Hi Rocky,
I have an interesting case where once validated an complete environment in HPUX11 on a L1000 I went and installed the production on a L2000 but with the same cpus and RAM on HPUX11i, the production box gives better response (average) and is more stable (went through couple of reboots whereas the the prod box continued to work ok a load of 9 but no reboot...).
RAM well its not going to hurt if you can afford 2 GB extra now the price is fair, but Im sure it will work fine without (well I hope).
But if you are going to replace the box in 6-8 months why would you give yourself such (over)work?

All the best

If possible you may want to consider a hardware upgrade. Also, you may want to check with you dba to see if there are some things you can improve on the database performance on the box. There is a HPUX performance and tuning white pages on HP's site that is real good. This might ease some of your peaks on your box.

Rocky,

This isn't an answer to your question so no points required here, but I use the attached spreadsheet to help ensure I have all required files saved and restored on the newly cold-installed system. Some of it may not apply depending on what software you have, etc.

Re: Will upgrading from 11.0 to 11.i place additional demands on server?

Thanks for the additional advice. As you can tell, I'm a newbie who inherited the unix box. Reading all I can and have an old box to play with. Thanks for the help.
