Windows -> HP-UX PPP connections

Hi all,
I'm trying to setup a windows2000 to hp-ux11i PPP connection with two USR 56k Faxmodems

I followed the Installing and Administering PPP document from HP

I successfully (?) configured the modem via sam. I can access the device with cu -lttyd0p0.

My problem is that when I dial in, the ppp connection can't be established. The windows client returns with a "server did not respond " message.

Physically the connection is made, both CD leds are on. I also monitored the uugetty process. It starts up with
root 8970 1 0 16:12:37 ? 0:00 /usr/lbin/uucp/uugetty -r -t 60 -h ttyd0p0 9600

and as soon as a connection is made it changes to
root 8970 1 0 16:07:26 ttyd0p0 0:00 /usr/lbin/uucp/uugetty -r -t 60 -h ttyd0p0 9600

I've then enabled "Show terminal window" on the client . I got a lot of chunk... but at least something is happening.

I played around with different settings : speed ( 9600 upto 56700 ) , Compression/no compression , ... no luck

So here my questions :

a) Why doesn't the uugetty process respond to the request ( or if it does, why does nothing happend ? ;) )

b) is it possible to trace/log the uugetty process ?

c) any other suggestions ??

Thanks Marc

Re: Windows -> HP-UX PPP connections

I went through this EXACT scenario with Win2K in the last couple of days. My experience says that this is a Win issue, not a Unix one.
First of all, have you been to M$ website? I remember that there is a real problem between Win2k and one kind of USR modem, but I can't remember which one. You should check the patch level of Windows as well as ensuring that you have the latest driver for your modem. This doesn't mean that this will all work, however.
My issue was a Lucent Win modem inside a Compaq--I got the exact same error as you while dialing into my ISP. No amount of Win2k patching and screwing around with the settings would make it work. I eventually went out and purchased a Zoom USB modem, and disabled the Lucent in Device Manager. The Zoom modem was cheap ($49 minus $20 rebate) and it worked the first time, and continues to work.
I spent about 5 days trying to get the Lucent modem to work--it worked under NT 4.0 and Win 98SE, but I couldn't get it work at all under Win2k--even though it was a supported configuration. I had our senior Windows admin spend a couple of hours on it, and he couldn't make it work either.
So see if you can buy/beg/borrow/steal another modem for the Windows box and try again. I'll bet you get different results.
