Workarounds for missing ftp functionalities in sftp

I am trying to replace the legacy (telnet, ftp, rlogin, rcp, remsh...) commands with the secure equivalents (ssh, sftp, scp...). I have installed T1471AA on HP-UX and the Cygwin equivalents on my Windows PC.
During my first usage of these commands, what I see missing from the sftp (and scp) command is:
(1) No ascii/binary file transfer option selection.
(2) No way of interactive prompting to multiple file transfers (like the ftp "prompt" and "mget/mput" commands).
Any suggestions and workarounds will be highly appreciated.

what is the version of sftp you are using?
You can use scp for multiple file transfer.

Easy to suggest when don't know about the problem!

Secure shell (for HP-UX) is version 4.20. I guess the utilites both in HP-UX and Cygwin are using SFTP protocol version 3.
I routinely transfer files from a system using ftp like this:
...
ftp> prompt
Interactive mode On .
ftp> ascii
200 Type set to A.
ftp> mget *txt
200 Type set to A.
mget char.txt? n
mget chartab.txt? y
200 PORT command successful.
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for chartab.txt (765 bytes).
226 Transfer complete.
ftp: 778 bytes received in 0.00Seconds 778000.00Kbytes/sec.
mget ls.txt?
That is, I want to interactively select and transfer *some* of the files, let's say, ending with txt to my PC and do the trasfer in ascii (text) mode.
