						Stephan's right.  The points can have as much meaning as the responses.  It's your part of the dialog here.  The points tell other folks how useful each tip was.  
Besides, 6 months from now, you might not remember how you got through your problem. If you didn't have points assigned you wouldn't know which suggestion helped and which didn't.
And anybody else that has a similar problem has to submit the same question because they can't tell what worked and what didn't.
And the most obvious thing to me is when I see a person with a problem I can solve I FIRST look at how many responses they never assigned points to. Because if they don't assign points, it means (to me), that they aren't even reading their OWN question. So what's the point of helping a person that essentially has their ears plugged?
I hope this isn't too caustic. I'm not good at subtle. HP's little memo about the points is much better at explaining it.
