X Emulator of choice ??

Which PC X emulator do people use and which do they prefer ??

I have used Hummingbird Exceed in the past and want to get something in my new site however its pretty pricey for even a single seat license and I have to convince the boss to spend the money.

Any comments welcome.

Thanks

Steph

Sorry, but I spent two years getting my company to switch thousands of pc's from Reflections to the better product: Exceed!!!

Of course a PC with Linux on it would be better.

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

Hi Steph,

For choice, definitely Exceed!

For price.... there is a freebie called 'VNC'. You can get it here. Download it and try it out. You might think that free that does something (VW Beetle) is better than the expensive but more slimline (Porsche)

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

My favorite X emulator is an HP X terminal, followed by a D350 or a SunBlade 100. :)

I've had unhappy experiences with both Exceed and PCXware.

Fortunately, I don't have to deal with PC X emulators right now, but the next time I have to, I plan to try the Cygwin stuff.

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

I, too, like X-Thin Pro. It is a reasonable size to download. They have a free trial that will work for 15 or 30 minutes at a time, so you can try it out for free.

I have even used X-Thin Pro over a dial-up with pretty good success. It wasn't real fast, but it worked!

Hi

Look at Linux

Cheap easy . unix flavour. I use an old PC with redhat and can connect in Graphics to several HP Boxes at the same time.

HP has a GNOME for UX so you can even standardise what you see.

Definitely EXCEED. Tried lots, this is the easiest to setup and use and the least problems with fonts, Xresources etc.

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

Hmm, fun I would say Reflection, and not Exceed. Definitely.

Then again, I am in the advantage that I have some influence, because I'm in the WRQ alpha test team, and currently use Reflection Suite for X 10, which is much better than all previous versions and finally supports the scroll wheel in X. Has superb support for dual head display and is very reliable.

For the free stuff, I'd recommend Cygwin, which since a month or two has X11R6 port available in the default setup and does not need jumping through many hoops to get it to work. Cygwin however ships with twm, a somewhat braindead window manager. fmwm is much better and is rather easy to move to coming from CDE

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

Hi Steph,

i work with ReflectionX and if you configure it properly it works ok. But you should not use it as a standard installation.... *brrrrr*

Allways stay on the bright side of life!

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

Hi Steph,

contrary to some of us I had the problems with eXceed in the past (especially with "sam" and "ITO"), and hence had to switch to Reflection/X (which I always liked more).
"VNC" is a very nice compromise (run it over SSH to overcome the security problems) and it is available even for my PDA (Linux, of course ;-)
"CygWin" comes with XFree4.2, these days, and seems to be pretty fast and stable.
But another choice could be a "live" Linux CD-ROM, like from "www.knoppix.de" or "www.demolinux.org" or the one that S.uS.E distributes on trade fairs - you simply boot your PC from that CD-ROM and it doesn't even touch the hard-disk (having a swap-space there is always a good thing, though). And then you have *real* Linux with *real* X11R6...

Just my $0.02,

Another vote for Exceed here. I've always found it easy to configure, and I've never had any support issues with it.

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

Steph,

Years ago we did an evaluation of the available products. I was not involved, unfortunately, so I can only tell you the results and not the reasons.

The field was narrowed down to Exceed and Reflections and, for whatever reasons (cost for site license, ease of setup/maintenance - I really don't know), the winner came up Reflections. We've been happily using it for 6 or 7 years now with no real complaints.

One more vote for Reflections.

We run Reflections here and don't have any problems that I know of. Add another one for Reflections.

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

Hi Steph,

I also vote for Exceed.
But prefer UNIX (HP, Sun, AIX - whatever's avail) workstations whenever possible.

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

I have use ExCeed for several years, and have been pretty satisfied. ExCeed is fairly expensive if several persons need it. I still prefer the "real" thing though (native unix, linux workstation).

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

I have used both Exceed and Reflections.
Exceed is a lot easier to use and set up.
After using Reflections for a few years, I have learned to use its functionality better. Reflections has some capabilities that allow you to define Desktop Icons to do specific tasks.
I don't remember Exceed being able to do this, but it may now with newer versions.

Re: X Emulator of choice ??

I have Exceed, Reflections and VNC on my work PC. I have never liked Reflections partly because I have never been able to set it up correctly. Exceed has my my favorite for a number of years. Recently I installed VNC on all of my servers so I can run a full desktop over the VPN, something I have been unable to do with either Reflections, or Exceed. VNC is free, they have clients for UNIX and Windows and it will even work over a dial up line. Speaking of dial up or VPN, the VNC sessions stay active wether you maintain a connection or not, very important if dialed in and the phone line drops. Just redial and take up where you left off. Since it is free I see no reason not to give it a try.
If it has wheels or a skirt, you can't afford it.
