X Server

I'm trying to get X-Win32 to connect to an N class running 11.0. I can telnet with no problems, but my X-Win32 says password invalid. I know I changed something, because it used to work. I don't remember what, and can't figure it out.
Anyone out there have any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: X Server

The password by the sounds of it :)

Are you saying the X-win 32 password is invalid,

does the product come with on-line help or references a password file.

It maybe wise to give the vendor a quick bell otherwise if this is a X server or hpux error please detail the exact message ..... i presume you are attempting a full XDMCP / X windows connection when the problem occurs ?

Re: X Server

Yes, the CDE Login I get through X-WIN32 tells me "Login incorrect, Please try again"
I know I have the correct password, because I can telnet to the server fine.
The online help is not too helpful, and you have to use e-mail for support (not the greatest support ever, but I like the product. Their support doesn't know HP-UX very well).
Just thought someone may know the file(s) that are used for authentication. They must be different or have some other/additional file(s) for x-windows authentication.
Any additional help would be great.

Re: X Server

Try this : CDE has user based X authentication :

see /usr/dt/config/Xresources : MIT MAGIC COOKIES & dtlogin*authorise= FALSE etc etc

Though it wouldn't ask for a password ? maybe worth ago disabling it and re-starting the Xserver

NB ps -ef grep X will return an X :0 -auth string if enabled.

Make sure the caps lock key is NOT on ... this has happened before.

Exact syntax of the error ... is this 11.x its not an ice authority error by any chance ? If so check there's either :

a) the same user logged onto the same box but from another Win 32 session running somehere

b) multiple users sharing the same home dir or UUID etc ... under 11.xx CDE has problems now iceauthority is implemnted.

PS I posted something on this a few months ago .... check iceauth on the forum search engine if applicable.

Re: X Server

X-Windows / CDE authentication uses the same /etc/passwd file that everything else uses. There is nothing different.

Your CAPS lock is not getting turned on when you start X-Win32 is it?

Re: X Server

Caps is not on. I checked that first.
I don't know what iceauth is, so I'm thinking that's not it. I am the only person using X-Win32 or any other X windows software to connect to this server, so it's not duplicate users.
Looked in /usr/dt/config but found no Xresources file there. Looked at another N class server running 11.0 and compared the files in both /usr/dt/confg and /etc/dt/config. They both match.
Very strange. The exact message.. I;ll put a screen shot here so you can see.
Thanks for your input!

Re: X Server

From the options menu => session => failsafe ?

Can you login now ? If yes tell me more about your networking.

If no check the following :

syslog.log,$HOME/.dt/start.log , output from dr_dt

Is NIS involved ? Is root affected ?

As to authentication : yes etc/password is used, I was referring to X authority as I can't understand why the same passwd works via telnet without more clues.

Ps missed the exact warning string on the screen shot ...typing it will do

Re: X Server

Failsafe session does not work, nor does any other sessions.
We do have 2 internal networks. One routed (which this machine is on) and one not routed, which my workstation is on. (this works with other 9000's on the routed network from my workstation, so it's specific to this server).

No NIS at all. Root is affected and all other users I've tried mine and ones I've created just to test user rights. No go.

The message simply says "Login incorrect; please try again." Same message for all users and sessions.

The login try's do show up in the btmp file as invalid login's.

I'll attach the startlog file from ~/.dt/
There was nothing in the syslog.log file.

Re: X Server

Well, I don't know what it was, but I rebooted the server and now I can login find.
Very weird.
Thanks all for your help.
