XDMCP to HPUX 11.31 - is it supported?

I have two rx2600 servers. On the first server, I did a clean install of HPUX 11.31. CDE didn't appear to get installed, so I installed it from source.

On the second rx2600, I did an update from HPUX 11.23 to HPUX 11.31 and it appears to have worked just fine (minor issue with Perl, which is now resolved).

I have a xterm (an iGel, a Linux-based xterm) that I used to connect to the servers. Prior to the upgrade, the rx2600 running HPUX 11.23, allowed XDMCP direct connections from my little xterm. Now, after the upgrade, I get some strange behavior. I get the normal CDE login screen. I enter my username, whether that's root or some other username, whatever, and it accepts. When I start to enter the password, the X connection dies and resets, bring me back to the login screen.

This happens on both the server I upgraded to 11.31 and the server I cleanly installed to 11.31.

In my /var/dt/Xerrors on both servers, I see messages such as:

/usr/bin/X11/xset: bad font path element (#60), possible causes are:
Directory does not exist or has wrong permissions
Directory missing fonts.dir
Incorrect font server address or syntax

Also, If I start an XDMCP direct session via Reflections from my Windows laptop, it works fine. I get a CDE login window and I am able to log in and get the CDE desktop.

Any clues? I'm thinking it must be some sort of font issue but I am not familiar enough with this to make any sense of it.

Re: XDMCP to HPUX 11.31 - is it supported?

Shalom,

XDMCP is supported on the OS, you've proven that yourself.

Where its probably not supported is your network.

To reduce packet collision and congestion network admins segment networks with VLAN, virutal lan segments. The servers are on network 192.168.0.0 network and the second floor users are on 192.168.2.0 network and routers pass relavent traffic and block network wide broadcast.

XDMCP uses a network wide broadcast and VLAN configurations block that. Change your connection methodology, use Reflections and connect directly by host name or ip address.

Re: XDMCP to HPUX 11.31 - is it supported?

I don't think it's a network issue. My servers and my xterm are in the same subnet, with the same subnet mask, etc.

For the workstation I upgraded, I maintained a copy of its old 11.23 root disk. I just confirmed that if I boot off the 11.23 disks, then the xterm works fine. No issues in logging in. When I boot it back to 11.31, I can only enter the username and start entering the password when it resets and takes me back to the CDE login screen.

Re: XDMCP to HPUX 11.31 - is it supported?

Has anyone else seen anything like this? I'm still having the issue. I have a dual-boot rx2600 with HPUX 11.23 and HPUX 11.31. When it is booted under 11.23, everything works fine with XDMCP. When it's using 11.31, I am unable to get logged in using my xterm via XDMCP. I think it must be some sort of font issue, but I don't know enough to diagnose. Can anyone point me in some direction? Any known issues with 11.31 and font paths?

Thanks,
Doug
