YACQ: OS Cloning - LVSPLIT or JUST PULL OUT DISK
Yet Another Cloning Question ;^ ):
I've a reference Server, disks are mirrored. Planning to use the other disk on another server (same architecture of course). Which is better, good, best practice:
1. LVSPLIT each VG00 LVOL and PVREMOVE the DISK?
or
2. Just shutdown the server, pull out the disk (since quorom is set)..

Re: YACQ: OS Cloning - LVSPLIT or JUST PULL OUT DISK
Hi,
1. You can do lvsplit but you cannot vgreduce as you will need to remove the LVs on the disk in order to vgreduce. If you reduce the mirrors on the target disk, vgreduce and then use it to boot the other system, it will work but you have to get into lvm maintenance mode and fix quite a few things. Also if these are going to be serviceguarded together, you will need to do a vgchgid on the target disk in LVM mode. I wouldnt' suggest it unless you are very familiar with LVM commands.
2. This will work. But there are quite a few things you have to do in LVM maintenance mode as mentioned before. You will also have to fix your primary server as it is missing one disk.
Best way is to use make_tape_recovery. Safe and troublefree.

You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try

Re: YACQ: OS Cloning - LVSPLIT or JUST PULL OUT DISK
2) is the correct choice. As long as you have -lq set in your mkboot -a on BOTH disks then you can boot both boxes. I do assume that the boxes are identical down to the same controllers in the same slots. After booting, you can proceed to re-mirror on both boxes.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: YACQ: OS Cloning - LVSPLIT or JUST PULL OUT DISK
Best Practice is Ignite. It maintains integrity of the volume group.
If not, the lvsplit method is the one I have used in the past.
