Re: Building a Linux Server

Well, why dont you tell us what you want to use this server for ? it would be easier, because you can have so many different enviroment!

Some people will install everything, then tailor, others install the minimum then build on demand.

I always try to get away whith the minimun services/open port/application, and build on heve to have approche.

Huc-
We have 3 small servers that run our applications and store files/webpages. We just got a new bigger server in and I'm trying to build this server to eventually put everything on it (the 3 small servers so we can scrap them).

I haven't gotton that j2se yet. I just got back from a long weekend. I'm having trouble getting out via ftp. I need to get to that java.sun site to get that j2se file but i'm not sure if it's a ftp problem on my end or what. There could be something obvious to configure I don't know about. Thanks

Re: Building a Linux Server

No, problem glad to help

Also did you know the Redhat 9.0 is remplced by Fedora ?

What that means is if you have got 2 different path from now on one with fedora one with Redhat for entreprise... read more informations on that on this link

Hope this is usefull

Re: Building a Linux Server

How I recently peformed the task.

I sat down with a notepad session open and made notes on all functionality the server would need to perform. I looked at the installation notes on the Red Hat 9 cd's and saw that Apache 2.0.x comes with it. That requires some changes to my stnadard httpd.conf file.

After outlining all the features I wanted installed, I then went through the standard installation process and got the server going via a gui installation.

After booting onto the network, the customization process begins.

Taking my httpd.conf file from apache 1.3 and converting it for 2.0 use, bringing other customizations such as DNS into the new server.

Next I used the GUI kenrel tool to make changes to handle large numbers of users.

Last, I migrated users and configurations an necessary cron scripts from the old server.

You don't even seem to be performing an upgrade, which should make y our path easier.

All you need to do is make sure you have sufficient resources for your users after picking the applications to install.

I would download and run Bastille security hardening tool. Lots of users means lots of chances to accidentally breach security. Bastille helps.

Re: Building a Linux Server

When i do a nslookup on redhat it comes back successful.. When i try to IP to it, it says the network is unreachable. This seems contradicting...?

Re: Building a Linux Server

On your last post.

Try a traceroute

traceroute redhat.com

Seems that there is an inconsistency either with your DNS server, or your route to the firewall.

That confituraion is in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts

directory.

Link for Bastille.

Get the rpm

rpm -s name_of_rpm
