Can we upgrade an RHELAS3 server to RHEL5?

Hi,

We have a x86 RHELAS3 system that needs to be upgraded to RHEL5.

[root@bangpcrh212 home]# uname -a
Linux bangpcrh212.bea.com 2.4.21-37.ELsmp #1 SMP Wed Sep 7 13:28:55 EDT 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

[root@bangpcrh212 root]# more /etc/redhat-release
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon Update 6)

Can this be done. Please suggest.
I have downloaded all the 5 RHEL5 iso images from the redhat site.

Thanks & Regards,

Please see the Installation documentation for exact information:

http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-5-manual/Installation_Guide-en-US/ch-upgrade-x86.html

"While upgrading from Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4 Update 4 is supported, you are more likely to have a consistent experience by backing up your data and then installing this release of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 over your previous Red Hat Enterprise Linux installation."

Shalom,

Simple answer: no.

You need to do a cold install of the Os and then migrate your applications.

Honestly speaking RH 5 is not production quality in my opinion. Major problems need to be resolved.

You would be much better off with RH 4 update 4 which is a much more mature release.

Re: Can we upgrade an RHELAS3 server to RHEL5?

I'm using RH5 (just desktop) now, as I often do to evaluate it before deploying on production systems. I agree with Steven's assessment of it not being quite ready yet. It's still an ".0" product, and while a nice product, I'd not deploy it for production use until it's a ".1" or preferably a ".2" release product.

First issue thus far; printing is kind of a mess, and not as clean as RH4.x. Secondly, the tools for patch management (up2date goes away) aren't nearly as nice, as the "yum" tool for patch management seems to be an all or nothing type of thing, with no nice rulesets like: "by default, leave kernal alone" for example.

I've seen a few differences (that is problems) in terminal emulation which were unexpected, as RH Linux has been doing these things fine since I was using RH9.x.

I'm sure I'll find others.
