Compare bcm5700 vs. tg3

Could anybody tell me, what are differences between drivers bcm5700 and tg3. Which one is better for DL380G4?

Hello,

Just one thing : the bcm5700 provided by the genuine Linux kernel does not support all BroadCom chipsets. Then I presume you are trying to compare bcm5700 provided by HP with tg3 from the genuine kernel.

For normal usage, there seems to be no difference between tg3 and bcm5700. But in the past, there used to be some differences in bonding configuration, or network crash dump functionality (RedHat's netdump).

tg3 is a module for the NIC card that comes by default with redhat linux for broadcom NIC's but in most of the cases you will have a connectivity lost issues after some time if you use tg3.

In this case we need to use the bcm57xx modules that have been provided by broadcom itself.

I've been forced to use both and had very littl e variance in the actual results. bcm5700 was not built into earlier Linux kernels so on older Red Hat releases, I use tg3.

Practically speaking, I can do bonding on either driver and notice absolutely no difference in performance an reliablity.

Practically speaking, I can do bonding on either driver and notice absolutely no difference in performance an reliablity. This is with Red Hat 4. Red Hat 3 makes bonding a little harder, but it can be done with either driver.

I have asked, because I had big problem with tg3. Since on server worked a couple of employees everythinks works ok, but when I switched all samba shares from old server to new one, problems become.
Yesterday I changed tg3 to bcm5700 (from hp.com) and now server is working smoothly.

One very salient difference between tg3 and bcm5700 is that Broadcom have ceased working on bcm5700 and are now supporting the tg3 driver. Enhancements bugfixes etc are being put into tg3. The bcm5700 driver is I believe considered "mature."

Hewlett-Packard are following Broadcom's lead on that one.

If you are experiencing problems with tg3, it would probably be a good idea to excercise your official support channels.
