connecting RedHat8 to internet via dial up connection

Greetings all! I am a novice to Linux and I am using Redhat8 in a dual boot system where the other OS is Win XP.(a neccessity due to the school I am attending)I have the Redhat Linux 8 Bible and have attempted to follow to the letter the instructions for setting up a ppp connection. My ISP is SBCGLOBAL.NET. Thus far I have gotten no response. When I attempt to scan modems from the terminal, I am advised that the command '$wvdialconf create' is not found. The only other error I've gotten is 'sorry modem busy' when checkin modems from the dialog setup window. Can anyone tell me where there might be detailed step by step directions for dial up connection?

Troy,

What PC and what modem do you have? Most likely you'll have a Winmodem and have a harder time to configure it in RH.

Here are some resources for you : http://www.linmodems.org/
http://www.danielrees.me.uk/ltmodem.html

If you have a winmodem then reference these guides to help configure it OR buy an external hardware modem or some other means of connecting to the web. If you don't have a winmodem then post the make and we can help you from there.

Could you check if the 'wvdial' package is installed? (rpm -q wvdial)

If it isn't, you'll need to grab it from the install media.

If you are using KDE though, you an use KPPP as a replacement however.

Otherwise, just use 'neat' to set up your dial-up connection.

Re: connecting RedHat8 to internet via dial up connection

There are drivers coming available for many winmodems that allow them to work with Linux.

ITs a silly design, and in the long run, you are much better off spending $30 and getting a compatibile modem.

But first take a look at the modem, figure out who built it.

Then go to the web site of the maker and see if its a winmodem. If its winmodem go for the driver or new modem.

If its not neat or the system will work.
