Date and time is changing automatically in linux server (redhat or suse) running on VMware.

Hi All,

The date and time is changing automatically in linux server (redhat or suse) running on VMware.

I have changed correct date and time manually for lot of times.

How to solve this?

Check for ntpd running on your server.

ps -e |grep ntp

Maybe you have miss configured it.

Do you have VMware Tools installed?

If the tools are not installed, the clock of the virtual machine can drift a lot from the "true" time. One feature of the VMware Tools is to synchronize the clock of the VM to the clock of the underlying physical hardware.

1)Where can we get the rpm file of VMwaretools to be installed on Redhat / Suse linux from?

2)How to configure VMwareTools to solve above issue?

I would start at vmware.com or kb.vmware.com

Hi:

You should find the VMware tools on the workstation menu. Install them in each guest environment. See:

http://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/new_guest_tools_ws.html

You really need to install these as they add copy-and-paste features between the guest and the host as well as shared directory support.

Re: Date and time is changing automatically in linux server (redhat or suse) running on VMware.

I've noticed that sometimes it is not enough with NTP as virtual machine time on occasion has a tendency to drift away too fast for NTP to correct, especially if an older Linux kernel is being used. I've found this document helpful in that regard:
http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1006427

Skipz, Senthil kumar said that no ntp is running.

Hi All,

Can any one tell me explicitly about installing and configuring VMwareTools on linux (RHEL 4)?

Hi (again) Senthil:

Did you look at the link I offered you? If you follow it a bit more you would find:

http://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/ws_newguest_tools_linux.html

Since you said you are a "...linux server (redhat or suse) running on VMware." your Linux is the "guest" operating system and the above link applies.

Re: Date and time is changing automatically in linux server (redhat or suse) running on VMware.

Shalom senthil,

1) Computer clocks are notorious for not being accurate.
2) Throw in vmware and the fact it doesn't get CPU clock speed and therefore timing right, and its no wonder that the clocks are off.

What I think is happening is that vmware is trying to provide ntp style services and its not working out due to issues with the machine clock underlying.

You may find vmware tools work, you may find old fashioned ntp to a valid outside ntp server on your LAN does the trick.

Note that ntp won't magically solve a major discrepancy, you may need to use the date command to clear that up.
