Re: DL380 G4 + SLES9 + StoragwWorks Ultrium 215

lshw is not installed. Is it a standard SLES9 package? Where I can get it?

Re: DL380 G4 + SLES9 + StoragwWorks Ultrium 215

Hi,

As mentioned previously, this might be because the Ultrium drive isn't supported when connected to the SmartArray controller in the DL380 G4.

Can you see the tape device in the output of dmesg ?

# dmesg | grep st

Can you see the tape device in /proc/scsi ?

# cat /proc/scsi/scsi

How exactly is the drive connected ?

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Rob

We have another HP DL380 G4 with WINDOWS and it work fine with Ultrium 215.

>Can you see the tape device in the output of dmesg ?

No.

>Can you see the tape device in /proc/scsi ?

No. /proc/scsi/scsi is completely empty.

> How exactly is the drive connected ?

It is connected to external SCSI port.

Initially SCSI configuration was "Embedded duplex", but it is not supported both internal and external SCSI devices (Server message 1776).

I unplug internal SCSI Terminator and reconnect the SCSI Cable for "Embedded simplex" configuration according to 359214-004.pdf (HP ProLiant DL380 Generation 4 Server User Guide), page 96.

Re: DL380 G4 + SLES9 + StoragwWorks Ultrium 215

Hi,

What other hard drives are in the server ??

It's probably that you have a conflicting SCSI ID on the bus...

When in embedded simplex mode, SCSI IDs 0-5 are used for the 6 drive bays. As your drive is being picked up as ID3 it is probably conflicting either with a drive in that slot, or something on the backplane.

Try changing the ID on the tape drive to 6, and it will hopefully work...

Re: DL380 G4 + SLES9 + StoragwWorks Ultrium 215

Server has 5 HDD now (BIOS reports Port 2, SCSI ID's 0..4). Tape is reported as Port 1 SCSI ID 3.

P.S. I have already changed Tape SCSI ID to 6 manually and have got no effect.

Re: DL380 G4 + SLES9 + StoragwWorks Ultrium 215

Odd...

I would sanity check the SCSI cabling again.

I've just had another look at the maintenance and service guide, and in embedded simplex mode, the 6 internal bays are on port 2, and the external connector goes to port 1, which agrees with your previous post. If you've changed the SCSI ID on the tape drive to 6 and its still being picked up as 3, that suggests something is amiss. Did you power cycle the tape drive after changing the ID ?

Is the tape drive properly terminated ?

Rob

Re: DL380 G4 + SLES9 + StoragwWorks Ultrium 215

Another thought... A bit of Googling around shows that there may be a problem with older versions of the cciss driver used for the SmartArray controller.

Try installing the latest HP version from here:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27126.html

and see if that helps...

Thank you very much. With new scsi driver my system recognized this tape device!
