Fedora 3 and kernel building

Hi all:

Just recently installed Fedora Core 3 on an HP N5450 Pavilion notebook. Works well.

I am trying to add some additional apps that require knowledge of the kernel headers. Trouble, they don't seem to be on the system, at least where I am accustomed to - /usr/src/linux.

I have gone through the install process and I do not see where the kernel RPMs are included in the install.

How would I build a Fedora Core 3 kernel? Where are the kernel header files?

Thanks.

kernel-doc-2.4.21-15.EL
kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-13
kernel-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL
kernel-source-2.4.21-15.EL
kernel-utils-2.4-8.37.7

rpm -q --all | grep kernel

I think what you are looking for is in the source package.

Rick:

Here's a good link that I got from the fedoraforum.org site:

http://voidmain.is-a-geek.net/redhat/fedora_3_kernel_build.html

After getting and installing the kernel source rpm, you can also simply copy (or link) the source in /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES to your preferred usual location (e.g. /usr/src/linux). I often do that myself when I know for sure I'm not going to use the kernel on any other machine.

Re: Fedora 3 and kernel building

One other thing you might want to know about...

For some reason, the initscripts for FC2 and FC3 no longer force a periodic fsck on the linux drives. After running FC2 for about 90 days on my notebook, my FC2 installation died because of filesystem corruption. Using a rescue CD, I managed to save most of the data and config stuff from the drive, but having to do a new install and configuration was a major pain. You can likely avoid this kind of problem by using tune2fs to set a default fsck on your hard disks every 10 days or so. I highly recommend doing this for a notebook.

I all:

Many thanks for the assistance. Still doing research but I am a lot further than I was.

BTW, I find it terribly offensive to ask for points. Much like a waiter asking for tips from the customer.

Look at my record, I assign points!
