SolutionIf you (really) want to format your USB drive for Linux, you have to use fdisk to partition it, and next create a filesystem on the partition (newfs, mkfs).
But I would just use Windows to format it....

mkfs.vfat /dev/sda1
if you wish to format the USB that's on /dev/sda1 with fat

my Lexar specifically states that you cannot format it with OS level tools, but requires it's own windows program that directly writes to HW.
