Re: GRUB password

Try using the latest version of the installation CD available, or use:

linux rescue dd

If you have the driver disk.

Re: GRUB password

What is your OS version and update level. I had similar problems with SuSE 9, but with newer CD (with SP3) disk controler was visible.

Re: GRUB password

That is the expected behaviour if the rescue/install CD does not contain a driver for your hardware's HDD controller.

(What is your hardware? What is the name and version of your Linux distribution? Knowing these facts would make it much easier to give you a detailed answer.)

If the correct HDD controller driver is not available on the rescue/install CD, a driver disk was needed to install the system... and a driver disk will be needed to rescue the system.

If you are using RedHat Enterprise Linux, just combine the boot options for rescue mode and driver disk use: type "linux dd rescue" on the rescue disk's boot prompt.

Breaking an existing GRUB password is more difficult than simply overwriting the GRUB configuration file with a new password (or no password at all), but access to the HDD is needed for both actions.

Re: GRUB password

Hi,

The OS version is RHEL 4. The RAID controller is SMART Array P400i. I have dowloaded the driver for this and used "linux rescue dd" and inserted the driver disc. But still it is not taking the driver. System is HP Proliant DL360 G5.
Kernel 2.6.9-55 ELsmp.

Re: GRUB password

Try a live cd for Ubuntu or Debian.
Both have worked for our Proliant systems.
Mount the partition with the grub
configuration and change or delete the
password.
