HBA firmware/driver updates

For RHEL6 distributions i understand that the HBA driver and firmware version are dependent on the kernel level, for the Qlogic cards. Is this true for emulex cards too? Is it possible to update the firmware/driver seperate without the kernel update? Please advise.
