how to change the Desktop Env. plz help

OS: redhat 3/4 Ent.

if switchdesk, utility is not available, then which file(s) should be edit, to change/swith the Desktop(KDE/GNOME).

switchdesk changes the ~/.Xclients-default file.
WM could be gnome-session or startkde.
