HP C1537A SCSI Dat on CompaqDL380 ,RedHat 7.3 Kernel 2.4.18-3

Hi all ,
I am facing problems configuring SCSI Dat Drive on RedHat 7.3 Kernel 2.4.18-3
On Poweron the Dat is detected as

SCSI Port 0 SCSI ID2 HP C1537A TAPE DRIVE
I am using RAID 1 hdds.( 18GB + 18GB)
The Cpq arrays + all other devices gets detected properly except for dat drive .
I have also installed the aic7xxx driver from Compaq site for the adaptec controller .Still no luck

Re: HP C1537A SCSI Dat on CompaqDL380 ,RedHat 7.3 Kernel 2.4.18-3

If my memory serves me rightly, a DL380 only comes with an On-Board SmartArray 5i.

The only Array controller's that support a tape-drive on the RAID array are those that use the cciss driver.

You appear to be using the cpqarray driver.

Exactally what controllers have you put into this DL machine, and which of these has the tape drive plugged into it?

Re: HP C1537A SCSI Dat on CompaqDL380 ,RedHat 7.3 Kernel 2.4.18-3

The Tape Drive is connected to OnBoard SCSI Controller . And Hdd connected to Compaq Integrated SmartArray Controller (1.42 v)

On the MotherBoard the Controller is J2 SCSI Port2 INT.

On external controllers added .

And Thanx for replying

Re: HP C1537A SCSI Dat on CompaqDL380 ,RedHat 7.3 Kernel 2.4.18-3

*blink*

What generation of DL380 is this? Original series, G2, or G3?

Currently, it's sounding like the original series.

None of the DL380's come with an On-Board SCSI controller, that isn't an Array controller:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10495_na/10495_na.HTML
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10902_na/10902_na.HTML
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11473_na/11473_na.HTML

So first things first, what is that other controller?

From the boot-up sequence (POST), grab the entire init banners, as well as the line that finds the tape. Try not to paraphrase.

This will help us identify which controller things are plugged into.

Also, please confirm that the tape is plugged into an external port somewhere, and is not inside the case (in the hot-swap bay at the top-left corner).

It's the original series DL380 ..
There's a On board Array controller .

Re: HP C1537A SCSI Dat on CompaqDL380 ,RedHat 7.3 Kernel 2.4.18-3

Righteo! Perfect! The exact details we needed!

Unfortunately, this means that the drive is plugged into the on-board RAID controller, which is using the 'cpqarray' driver. This driver does not support the use of a Tape drive on the controller.

So this leaves you with getting another SCSI controller for your tape.

Sorry.

Re: HP C1537A SCSI Dat on CompaqDL380 ,RedHat 7.3 Kernel 2.4.18-3

Incidentally, you'll probably want to remove the:

alias scsi_hostadapter2 aic7xxx

line from your '/etc/modules.conf', as that controller doesn't exist in the system from what I can see.

Re: HP C1537A SCSI Dat on CompaqDL380 ,RedHat 7.3 Kernel 2.4.18-3

Unfortunately, no.

The on-board "Intergrated SmartArray Controller" is of the SMART2 era, and isn't supported by the 'cciss' driver. The range of cards for that is as I mentioned before. Here's the list of supported cards in the driver documentation:

* SA 5300
* SA 5i
* SA 532
* SA 5312
* SA 641
* SA 642
* SA 6400
* SA 6400 U320 Expansion Module
* SA 6i

so the 5i/5xx/5xxx/6i/6xx/6xxx (I missed 6i ealier! my bad!) series.

The easiest thing to do is to just get a separate SCSI controller, and use that for your tape drive.

It should fit into one of the available PCI slots in the machine.
