Based on the first post, chances are the problem isn't so much the lack of a driver (although going all the way back to 4.0 Debian may be a problem there anyway) but perhaps the lack of firmware for the driver. Broadcom NIC firmware is not open source, so Debian has put it out in non-free and not necessarily placed non-free in the typical install path (or even in the images) Dann Frazier has created a script:
