I booted with Smart start 7.6 CD and created one logical partition with raid 5.
when i put RHEL As 4 cd and try to boot
it atempts to boot from cd, hard disk, pxe after that it says non-system disk or no disk drive available and again reboots.
please let me know how to install RHEL AS 4 on this particular server.
I read in the forums that we need to provide the smart array controller driver during the installation but in this case it is not at all booting from the RHEL CD so where do i provide the drivers.

It seems like you have bad RHEL4 CD. Check md5sum of ISO image and try to burn it again.

Re: Install RHEL AS 4 on a DL380 G4.
If you use RHEL4 ES upd4 see md5 sums below:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES 4 Update 4 (x86)
ISO Size MD5 Checksum
Install Disc 1 173M a8c4a13f27e3ec1a462c0f4092b922fe
Install Disc 2 625M 81f38f85af7f335ccdc981f28b886cee
Install Disc 3 632M 3ce64531d3ed8905d84e1d2a8f309fe9
Install Disc 4 616M 2c3523c425d33d76224f8555aef7a1ee
Install Disc 5 81M dd87fba8f63f6763691ac390ded87f1a
in linux you run
md5sum rhel4-disk1.iso
command and you should see the same a8c4a13f27e3ec1a462c0f4092b922fe .
BTW, can you browse files on your CD on some computer - unix/linux/windows?

He probably needs to recheck the BIOS to see CDROM is in the boot list.

Re: Install RHEL AS 4 on a DL380 G4.
didn't understand the below line on hp site
"Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (x86) will prompt for the Updates Diskette and the ProLiant Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (x86) Driver Diskette during the installation procedure."
does that mean there are two floppies to be provided during installation, one is updates diskette and 2nd is Proliant RHEL4(x86). or is the psp cd.

Re: Install RHEL AS 4 on a DL380 G4.
I do a lot of Linux installs. I noticed some disturbing issues with AS 4, update 4. It did not wish to boot off an NFS mount point as did ES. ES 4, update 4 has also had this issue intermittantly, forcing us to use install media.
I believe there are some issues, however download error, which should be evident in the iso checksum can cause some of this behavior.

Solutionno, no, no!!!
RHEL3 works with RAID 0,1,5,10,...
but RHEL 3 (as every other software) has a list of supported hardware - in our case we're speaking about RAID controller.
you should check this certification matrix and probably check RHEL release notes regarding specific RAID model.
BTW, I suggest to use the latest available RHEL3 update level (8 for now?)

i will send the output of
-uname -a
- /proc/cpuinfo
later since the server is at a client site.
