Re: installing Linux 3 on DL380 G4 with Smart array 6i
You configured the container in the POST tools before booting the OS?
You then booted the first Linux disk, typed in either 'expert' or 'dd' so you would be prompted for the driver diskette you downloaded?
You selected 'cciss' from the list of drivers it found on the diskette (or Compaq Smart Array)?
And after all of this, it still isn't finding the disk?

Re: installing Linux 3 on DL380 G4 with Smart array 6i
However, you're using a non-updated version of RH Enterprise. You need to get at a minimum Update1.
From the documentation for that driver diskette:
2.4.21-9.EL - Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 Update 1 (x86)
2.4.21-15.EL - Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 Update 2 (x86)
2.4.21-20.EL - Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 Update 3 (x86)
2.4.21-27.EL - Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 Update 4 (x86)
As you should have a real copy of RH, you should also have a RHN login to which you can download updated ISO's.
Get Update4. It'll save you time later.

Re: installing Linux 3 on DL380 G4 with Smart array 6i
Not unless you want to mess around with old libraries, old kernels, and full build environments of non production kernel compilations... and that's just what you need *BEFORE* you start.

Re: installing Linux 3 on DL380 G4 with Smart array 6i
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 doesnt work with DL380 G4 with Smart array 6i unless you add HP drivers.
Instead use Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.0 Update 1 (x86)or above cd's and it will work automatically.

Re: installing Linux 3 on DL380 G4 with Smart array 6i
If that's the case, the way I solved it (and it sounds insane, I know) was not to use GRUB, but use LILO as a boot loader. For whatever reason, that worked.
In my case, I was using a DL380G3 and Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1 update 4.
Hope this helps!

Re: installing Linux 3 on DL380 G4 with Smart array 6i
Enterprise server3.0 on a DL380 G4 with a smart array 6i controller, during the power on
Self test the system recognizes the 6i controller and created logical drive RAID1 (36GBX2NO'S).
The Red Hat Installation is not recognized the disk drivers and therefore it says
No place to install the operating system. The installation program is not finding the
Logical drive. During the installation we see the 'CCISS' driver attempt to and apparently
Successfully load, this should enable Red Hat to see the logical drive, but it does not detect.
I down loaded a new driver (cpq-cciss-2.4.50-30.rhel3.i386.dd.gz) from
The hp support site and have tried to load that drive but still problem persist.
Then I contact CCC-Engineer Mr.Kamal and Rajesh both are saying this is an OS-KERNEL related
Issues, so you download update pack and try.
Finally I download Red Hat Update3 Image from following site
(http://mirror.lnnu.edu.cn/01.iso/02.as3-updates3)and start the installation
It is working fine, because the Customer previous OS-Kernel Ver: 2.4.21-4 but download
OS-Kernel ver: 2.4.21-20.So it is problem with kernel Compatibility issues.
