Installing PA-RISC Linux 0.9 on series J 210XC workstation

Hello,

I have a series J 210XC PA-7200 workstation where I want to install PA-RISC Linux latest version 0.9.2, that you can get from http://www.parisc-linux.org

I can't get this version of Linux to recognize my hard disk, it's a A4461A 4GB SCSI-2 (the OEM it's SEAGATE model ST34371W). The boot program recognizes perfectly as a bootable device along the CD, but not PA-RISC Linux.

I'm able to boot from the CD and configure the network through DHCP or a static IP, even I can mount a nfs remote root partition.

But I can't install locally PA-RISC Linux. In the boot messages the the results of scanning the SCSI bus appears, the CD and a DAT tape drive show up but not the hard disk.

I don't know, I was thinking that I need to load a .o module in order to recognize the hard disk, but I'm not sure which one, and if current RAM disk kernel that loads when it boots from the CD it's already recognizing the SCSI controller (that is a NCR controller built it) maybe I don't need something else.

I'm exploring other paths like creating a boot server on my x86 Linux box, but I want to have a local version working.

Also, do you know what is the support for the default graphic card for this model on PA-RISC Linux?

Thank you,
Rogelio

Hi there.
Mostly the reason for this is a duplicate SCSI id. Pls check your devices.
Is your controler capable to handle thses disks ?

Re: Installing PA-RISC Linux 0.9 on series J 210XC workstation

I believe that the controller recognizes this particular HD because the BIOS interactive boot program shows it up as bootable device under this name: core.SCSI.6

I don't have HP-UX to test from other side if it's just a Debian GBU/Linux issue or a HW issue.

But looking to the Linux boot messages, I can see the device scanning performed on the SCSI bus and found all the SCSI devices listed:CD and DAT, but no HD.

Is there some sort of series J 210XC workstation BIOS SCSI utilities that I can use? I can see the "Service" menu but not sure.

Thanks

Have you confirmed the SCSI termination & jumpers on all the devices? Have you tried a different cable(s)?

What firmware do you have installed? 2.0 is the latest for the J210XC and is available here:
