http://www.sane-project.org/lists/sane-backends-cvs.html#S-UNSUPPORTED
Unfortunately, the 3970c is listed (by sane) as an Unsupported device.
The comments on th sane mailingl ist:
http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/2004-February/010110.html
So, nothing yet. Sorry.

Re: linux driver for hp scanjet 3970
Chris,
Do you like writing drivers?
http://www.google.com/url?sa=U&start=1&q=http://www.freeos.com/articles/2677/2/13/&e=10342
You may find if you scour the Internet someone has actually done that for you.
I'm trying some google searches but have little Internet time, so I recommend you do a little poking around yourself.
Some interesting backup to Stuart's post, validing his statement.

Release notes that might actually help you:

Possible 32 bit driver candidate:

A compliant on the same subject.

Might want to read this stuff, it might help.

Also, drop me an email maybe, I'm kind of interested in what you do. You have a very interesting job.

Re: linux driver for hp scanjet 3970
You can find SANE backends for this scanner here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hp3900-series
or here:
http://jkdsoftware.dyndns.org/english.php
It contains packages for debian (deb) and SuSE (rpm) and source code is available.
